I had a dozen reasons to follow them tonight. Or maybe just one.

I’d been surprised when Luke had gone back to Scarborough alone. Not that I thought Will would leave us, but he didn’t even try to get Luke to stay. Probably a smart move on his part. Luke wouldn’t have lasted long out here.

Anyway, after Luke had left and Will had wandered off, I got worried. I would have volunteered to keep an eye on him, make sure he hadn’t done anything even more stupid than he already had, but before I could go Djaq was already after him.

I’m still not sure if that surprised me. I mean, we all know how Will feels about her, and lately I’ve noticed they’re spending a lot more time together. And there was that time I caught them trying to sneak back into camp, but I still haven’t figured out what that was all about. If I had to guess, I’d say they were getting rid of that dress, because I haven’t seen it since. Pity. It was useful, and Djaq looked quite nice in it. I think Allan went looking for it a couple of times. He keeps disappearing with no explanation.

Anyway. So I wasn’t surprised that Djaq followed him. I mean, I thought she might still have been angry with him for that whole locking-her-up-and-yelling-at-her thing, but women tend to be a lot more insightful than we poor men might, so she probably forgave him ages ago.

So. What was I saying? Oh yes. I did follow them a little later on. Robin had gone off to see Marian, Allan had gone off to some pub or other, and… well, I’m not exactly sure where Little John went, but he’s probably in Nottingham checking on the people that the Sheriff poisoned.

So I thought, well, I better at least check on them. I was worried for Will, and while I know Djaq’s perfectly capable of taking care of him (look how quickly she calmed him down when his father was killed) … well, all right. I was curious.

So here I am. I’m pretty sure neither of them can see me. I have to tell you, I don’t think I was expecting this.

She’s kneeling on the ground with his head laying in her lap. He’s all curled up, and he’s crying. I mean, really crying. One of her hands is in his hair, and the other is clasped tightly between both his own. Her face is filled with a whole mess of emotions. Tears wet her own cheeks, and she looks so lost, so afraid and so desperately helpless.

He’s saying something. I can’t quite make it out; his voice is so broken. But she’s stroking his hair and wiping away his tears and telling him that everything is going to be all right.

This is possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, and definitely the most intimate. I feel dirty watching, but I can’t look away.

He’s saying something again. I… I can’t quite hear… Oh. Oh… He’s saying he’s sorry. There. I’ve moved a little closer. I can hear better from here. I really hope Djaq doesn’t look this way any time soon.

Yes. He’s saying he’s sorry. For all of it. For locking her up, for trying to kill the Sheriff, for almost causing the deaths of the entire of Nottingham. He’s worried he hurt her. She’s laughing. I don’t know how she can laugh at that. Oh. She says he’s always apologising to her. Funny, I hadn’t noticed him doing that.

Oh.

Oh this is beautiful.

I really shouldn’t be here.

Will’s sitting up now, a hand on her cheek, wiping her tears away. She’s wiping his away as well, and they’re both just sitting there looking into each other’s eyes.

He’s whispering now. I can’t hear him. I think… he… he did! He actually told Djaq that he loves her! I really should not be here. But I’m not leaving now; I need to see what she says. I know what she said to me earlier about falling in love. If she brushes him off it’s going to break his heart.

She’s not saying anything. Why isn’t she saying anything? She’s leaning her forehead against his. She still hasn’t said anything, has she? No, she’s just holding him. She’s holding him so tightly, and I’m surprised that she can breathe the way he’s holding her. He’s whispering something into her hair, and the two of them have almost become one being with two heads and eight limbs, rocking lightly back and forth.

Right. I really need to be gone now. God only knows what they’ll do to me if they catch me here.

I’ve backed away now, and they’re almost out of sight. I think I’ll just take one more peek, just in case…

… …

… Oh my - are they… he’s kissing her? He’s kissing her! And she is really kissing him back. It looks from here like he’s pulled her into his lap, which is… quite nice, actually.

Well. I’m very glad I came out here now. I’m very glad that someone is managing to find some happiness in this mess. Back to camp with me, before I see something they’ll really kill me for...
