It makes me a bit wistful, seeing how many people here have planned and executed elaborate Easter meals today. I used to do this, as well, even after I stopped celebrating Easter: it was an excuse for a Spring feast, and my favorite way to celebrate was with a stew of blanched early spring vegetables with a pesto garnish, a baked polenta with wild mushrooms, and rare lamb chops or duck, followed by some light, springy cake (last year: a chocolate-almond torte).

Severe back pain changes everything. I re-ruptured the disc from which I'd spent January and February recovering, and so I spent most of today on the couch. Dr. Tully Monster took pity and got out a chaise longue for me so we could sit outside in the warm breeze this afternoon and drink margaritas and discuss life, death, and belief in God (which neither of us now possesses, although once I had it in spades and he tried it out of respect for me, way back when we were callow undergraduates). We're pretty much agreed now that religious extremism is a real threat to modern civilization, but that seems like un fait acquis.

So for dinner we had, instead, some salmon fillets, roasted potatoes, and brussels sprouts, all from the freezer. Even just standing long enough to put these things in appropriate vessels for oven and microwave caused me pain, and Dr. Tully Monster willingly set the table and served the food for me when I just couldn't hack it any longer. Tomorrow, I call the doctor to plead for better drugs so that I can resume a semblance of my normal functioning, but I am grateful for a spouse who hates to cook but is willing to take over when it gets too hard for me.

When I get better, a fantastic spring feast will once again be in the future.
