I went to compete in the International Budo Sports Australian National Tournament today. I came fourth highest scoring senior female competitor over all, and came first in Ground Fighting and first in weapons sparring. I came fourth in my point sparring, but I was up against two black belts and a brown belt (one away from black) and me a lowly green belt (9 away from black). But I still feel ok about that because I managed to score twice on my black belt competitor before she beat me, so it wasn't a total wash-out.

I've decided next year I will also go in kata and weapons kata and breaking (boards and bricks and tiles and things) as well as the events I went in this year. That gives me a year to learn some decent katas and by then I might be purple belt, or maybe onto my first brown belt (there are 4 of them in the Zen Bu Kan Kempo style). That is, of course, if I am still living in NSW then.

For now I only have three weeks of training to get all my stuff together for my blue belt grading on the first Sunday in December. And they've changed the rules so we have to know all the Japanese terms for our blocks, strikes, kicks and holds. I'm going to have to chant them every time I do them to for an association in my very stubborn not-learning-the-names-of-things-and-people-very-well brain.

I've bought Jay a rug this year during the sale at the local saddlery. I'm hoping being almost completely covered by cloth might stop the bugs that cause the Queensland Itch from getting to him in the first place. He's only had it on for one day so far, and it already has gone from being a white rug with blue edging to a uniform brown rug. It looks like that it might rub his shoulders, so I'm going to look at satin bibs tomorrow to protect his coat and skin from that. I'll also need a second fly veil as the rug is now permanently attached to his current one and I'll need one to ride him in so he can concentrate.

We did a half pass in canter yesterday. He was perfectly collected and beautifully elevated and I thought I'll just touch his side to see if he's listening, and off he went on the diagonal, legs crossing. He really surprises me sometimes.

My new book came. I ordered it months ago and had almost forgotten it. Ladies of Grace Adieu - Susanna Clarke's (Strange and Norrell) new collection of short stories. It's cloth bound and slipcased and illustrated by Charles Vess and has a pretty silver satin ribbon page marker and it's just lovely. Never mind that I've already read about three of the stories online. That's my own silly fault. Now I get to read them from my copy.

Goiath and A Study In Emerald were like that when I read Gaiman's Fragile Things. I knew the stories well, but it was different reading them that time because it was my copy.

Anyway, I'm kind of stiff and sore and bruised and more than a little tired. So I think that's enough of a ramble for one night.

...

Buggah.

I haven't made my bed yet.

The down side of washing the sheets is I always forget to put them back on until I want to sleep in them again.

...

Maybe I can sleep right here in my beanbag. Then I don't even have to get up.
