So I got home from work today, and in not one but two of my gmail inboxes was
As of June 1, 2009, your Japan loan of $4,730 (including interest of $430) has grown to $5,109.46, with your additional transportation costs. According to our contract of 1 Sept. 2007, you should have the original paid off by 1 Sept. 2012.
At your current rate of $25 per month your loan will not be paid off by 1 Sept 2012. We allowed the $25 rate as long as you were employed part-time, which you still are.
However, since there seems to be no immediate prospect of your getting full-time employment, we ask that you increase the amount of repayment to $110.25 per month beginning 1 June 2009, which would allow you to pay off $4300 by 1 Sept. 2012.
To make repayment easier for you, we will eliminate the $430 interest in the original contract ($4300 divided by 39 months remaining= $110.25), if you agree to the higher repayment. You would then owe us, as of 1 June 2009, a total of $4,679.46, including your ongoing transportation costs.
Since David [my brother] expects to travel abroad by 2011, we would appreciate your help in allowing us to make him the same kind of loan we made you.
We do appreciate that you have paid what you have thus far, and we will continue to lend you money for your auto expenses beyond the original loan, the transportation costs to be repaid in continuation after the original loan.
If you have any questions or comments, we'll be happy to talk to you about this.

Background: back when I went to Japan two years ago, I had to pay for all of it... it was something like $5000 (ridiculously overpriced when I look at it now). My parents lent me the money for it, plus interest, in a contract. And I was and am grateful for it, because they are cheap people, you see. And they almost didn't lend it to me in the first place.
I am a little irked at this kind of... notice, though. Not to say they are being unreasonable, but, you know, rather than sitting down and talking to me about this, they send me an e-mail like I'm their customer rather than their kid. They like to have things in writing I guess. They've never really trusted me with much of anything, though I have no idea why, as I've never done anything to violate that (lack of) trust. In any case, they have access to my bank account and are taking out payments that way; it's not like I'm jealously guarding my feeble savings.
I dunno... with all their talk of how we're a family and their home is always open, in situations like this I sure don't feel treated like family. And it really makes me want to get out of here, and wish I'd set my Korea start date earlier, as I still plan on not telling them until I have a job offer. I mean, I want to tell them now, to let them know that, yes, I am headed in a set direction now and not just drifting aimlessly. But at the same time, I look forward to the smug satisfaction I'll feel when I drop this in front of their unsuspecting parentalite faces, and I can say, O HAY I'M LEAVING IN A MONTH BAI!*
And also. Before going to Korea I intend to pay off the entire loan all at once, so I can leave without owing them a dime.
*Immature? Maybe. I am okay with that.
