Words: 600
Rating: PG
Characters: Maggie, Riley, Buffy, other minor people
Setting: BTVS S4

He is a soldier, fighting the good fight, protecting the people, because he knows this is the right thing to do. It is not like any war you see on the nightly news, no. Not a war where casualties are spouted, rising and rising, like the scores at a football game. No this is an unseen nightly battle that could take them all in their sleep.

And he prevents it knowing no one will ever know. He does it because it is right. He does it because he’s told. He does it because he isn’t evil. His intentions are pure.

She is a technician- machines are her game. It’s her job to make sure the blasters are working, to work the bugs out of the com-cam. She works behind the scenes, not important enough to be on the in on the classified research, not brave enough to risk her life on the battlefield like the soldiers do.

She’s a tiny player in all of this. Mother tells her not to worry about the broken blaster to hand it over rather than fix it. She’s merely a cog in this machine, her part so tiny- how could she have moral sway?

He is a doctor. He is a culmination of years of hard work and sleepless nights with each moment fueled by the thought that when this is over he will be a helpful person. He will take the ill and make them well, take the weak and make them strong. And just how strong they are, now.

He is not sure what the exact chemicals are in the tablets he prescribes the soldiers, but what does it matter, they’re so strong, they fight so well. He helps the soldiers help the people, and what could be bad about that?

She is in charge. She knows what secrets lie behind every nook and cranny in the lab. She knows what goes on behind key carded doors, and she created most of it. Sure, many would scoff and frown and scold the idea. But it is her dream, her creation. To bring together demon, human, and technology to make perfection.

So much hard work, too much to be destroyed now. She cannot let it be jeopardized. In the end, will this small elimination be worth it? If her project survives, it will be. She is just working for the greater good.

He works for the government, pouring money into this project like water into a dying desert dweller. It drinks it up, but he knows the funding is well spent. The science of demon is just what the government needs on its side. In an era where man’s weapons are becoming more and more commonplace, it’s time to look to a technology no enemy would be crazy enough to harness.

Of course it is to wage war, but war to protect the country, war to preserve freedom. The money he spends is money towards the nation- an act of high patriotism.

Who released the demons? Who handed over the faulty blaster? A chain of tiny events got her left for dead in the sewer. A chain of events, and the loss of any link would have prevented the entire situation to begin with, she muses.

The Initiative is a machine. A well oiled, well ordered, well trained machine. But like a machine, it needs each part to keep functioning. Every piece must work together for the machine to run properly. A cog or a screw may be completely innocent on it’s own, unaware that each gear put together created something evil.
