thank you to the people who commented on my youtube videos in that last post/i am a very slow adapter of 'modern gadget technology' so posting a youtube vid was a BIG DEAL. thank you for watching them. matt's accent is better than mine, but what can you do.
we went to the arboretum on saturday, like i said. we brought quarters to feed the koi, though i'm not sure why. they seemed bigger than/mutated since our last visit, their sloppy fish bodies a study on orange and blue and white. they jockeyed for position above our hands and grappled for food by floating atop one another. nature's sick strategies. this photograph doesn't come close to defining the experience, because you can't see me screaming every time they come close to touching my fingers with their spooky, round mouths:
we ran around and checked out the magnolias in full bloom.
we tramped through bramble, undeterred by the prospect of snakes. i've never seen a snake in the district but i've seen my share of rats. by "share" i mean "two". and always at night. matt placates me by agreeing with my frantic/blind assessment that those horrid scuttling streaks must be 'chipmunks'. i don't think there are any chipmunks this far south.
we saw turtles being awesome in a lake, and a large piece of driftwood that matthew initially mistook for an eel. christ, can you imagine that? it's a damn shame that even the arboretum suffers the effects of improper waste disposal. the whole place was unsullied save for a small winding river next to the ferns. trashbags and cans mingled with yellow poppy flowers and water. unfortunate.
then we walked to the cherry blossoms. cherry blossoms = Total Bust. but the walk there was fantastic. any time matt and i want to walk to the potomac/the jefferson memorial, we have to walk on a sidewalk that borders 395-N. i always feel like we're on the run/being hunted due to all of the noise/hovering helicopters/roving jets that blight our path. i also always feel as if we're dead meat on that road. still, we survived to see another day. and some cherry blossoms. here's a BLAH picture:
our favorite part was the dance troupe wearing bowties and vests. but even they couldn't make us linger for too long.
we walked home via the fish market. a man with two top teeth ( i could count them while he mocked me ) made fun of me when i freaked out over the teeming blue crabs:
they were alive; their brethren to the tub on the right were red and steamed. i hate those scavengers of the sea yet it was still a sorry sight: the workers would pluck one and they'd desperately try to hang onto one of their cohorts.
we went home and then to a birthday party in ballston. then we went home and to a christian party. jesus should've appeared in order to give us a miracle and multiply the wine supply. still our host turned out the jams.
yesterday we (matthew) made baked ziti and went to see blades of glory. in a packed theatre, we were the only souls laughing during crucial bits. the only part i can remember is when will ferrell has been kicked out of skating and he's moonlighting at the ice capades, dressed as a giant wizard with a massive fake head. the camera lets you see inside the wizard head, where he's busy slugging whiskey and halfheartedly doing the wizard howl. thank you for moments like that, jesus.
also i want a brittany spaniel. we'll have one, and an australian cattle dog too. oh i pine for simple country life. grass blades and creaky porches. fresh air and moths that don't learn, thwacking blindly into light globes. just give me a home with that.
