That... is actually pretty dang interesting. And my area has a lot of folks advocating for more keepers to help out the bee population. But man, I know NOTHING in that arena, nor the rules in my area for it, so I'd have to do a lot of research first!
And my yard is a citrus bomb all by itself, so yeah. Turns out it'd require a permit (but it's easy to get), it's common in my neighborhood (go figure!) and there's even two local beekeeping supply stores with free classes. I might just drop in on one of those classes to see what's what.
For a bee project that's less work than managing honey bees, check out mason bee keeping. They are a native bee and amazing pollinators. No honey and all, but still fun to create nests for them. There's also top bar bee hives, and sun hives - both try to promote more natural bee keeping.
