Catching Up: Google Kitsmas and Night Lights

Dec 31, 2014 18:38

The Google holiday party this year was held at the California Academy of Sciences. I've actually been there recently but dracosphynx would have wanted me to go... So I struggled to get myself out the door and onto the shuttle from the Mountain View campus.

People have arrived! There's a man dressed as a British bobby on stilts in the background, heralding the theme of the party-- Sherlock and Holmes.

There was a backdrop of a Victorian-era London... And a giant dinosaur skeleton. I *had* to take this picture.

Dinner! Actually I snacked my way around the world but this was fairly representative of the holiday special cuisine. Beef short rib, mashed potatoes, some root vegetables, and a blended tea drink of some sort that was quite tasty.

This smiling person was happy to offer people 'fish and chips'. Strangely, their idea of chips were British 'potato crisps', aka freshly cooked potato chips, which could be had in paper cones, the better to be able to walk about the party while snacking. I'm not sure if this is legit or not. rowyn, want to comment?

Dessert: a tower of chocolates! There were chocolate truffles, marzipans, cream puffs, layered chocolates... So much deliciousness.

Despite my wondering how I'd survive a two hours long party, time went by quite quickly and in no time at all, it was time for the planetarium experience, an exploration of dark matter in the universe. I missed most of the explanation, sadly, but I enjoyed the eye candy!

The following pictures are unrelated to the Google Christmas party. I went out for a walk to the local used bookstore, realized the sky was getting dark quickly, then headed back home... Not quickly enough to avoid sundown, but that was lucky as I realized Christmas displays wholly change their character at night.
