My car saved my life today. Again.
Part of me almost wishes it would stop doing that already.
Driving along at a respectably high rate of speed, I was going uphill,
just exiting a passing zone when an ambitious, oncoming driver
decided he would get an early start on passing the people in front
of him. As I crested the hill, I found myself staring directly into his
headlights, less than 50 feet in front of me.
I responded by swerving over to the nonexistent shoulder, throwing
stones and dirt into the air as my right tires left the pavement
and by screaming. The oncoming driver swerved back between the
cars fore and aft of him. Meanwhile my car stably drove in that
unfortunate position until I was able to negotiate it back onto the
road without overcompensating into the car that was following him.
Of course, despite the appeal such an accident holds for me and
the benefit to the human race it would've been to eliminate two
Darwin Award winners from the gene pool simultaneously, I'm
glad it did not happen in this circumstance for two reasons.
First, the car following the Bad Guy in this story would've had no
chance to stop and through no fault of his own might well have
been injured or killed. Secondly, since my little Audi seems so
determined to save my life, it's possible that instead of my
existence being properly terminated, I would only be injured or
maimed in some significant way making my life and the lives of
those stuck with me more painful and tedious instead of less.
So, I count my blessings for now and hope for better luck in
the future. Thanks Audi!
