Last night my editor asked me when I'm leaving for Christmas...I had to tell him that I don't know if I'll be coming back. It's sucks to have to leave that job, I've really loved working at the paper. If they had any kind of budget to pay me as full-time staff, I don't think I'd be so eager to leave Taipei. It's been cool to work on a publication that is still so new. And maybe, just maybe I'll get to edit a whole issue by myself before I go...
It's funny, as much as I dislike the Stranger, it's still a great model for a really successful alternative paper. The Tablet was cool, but it never really got big, and now it's full of pop music drivel, apparently. The Rocket was awesome...RIP. My paper, POTS, is like a cross between old Tablet, and the Rocket, which means it's pretty cool, but without the cultural weight of the Stranger. I think it'll really turn out great over the next couple of years - at least I hope so. Get some good film & book columns, and regular indie music reviews, get my editor to learn how to proofread again, get more contributing writers.
I wonder what it's like to work at other weekly papers.
