Work today brought some questions and concerns to share.

Why are women tied to displaying their marital status by Mrs, Miss and Ms. The latter would be nice if all women used it. However, many women prefer to show that they are married and take on Mrs, some with their husband's surname, some hyphenated, and other combinations. This arose from a telephone call I made. The patient was a woman, born in 1920. I like to call seniors Mr and Mrs, give them the respect they have earned. We are given the first and surnames, today as my usual I asked for Mrs. Patient. The response was that there was no Mrs. Patient, concerned that I had the right phone number, I then asked if First Name Patient lived there. She responded in the affirmative. I feel that the situation was created by this very old-fashioned pattern of addressing women. Her response was like mine, she didn't know who I was and guessed it was a telephone solicitation. I felt that I had been rude, I apologized to her, but feel that the situation has been created by our society.

The other thing that is burning me up is the abuse of poor and misguided people by TV shows such as Dr. Phil and ones that focus on who is the father of the child-paternity being tested via DNA. These shows have huge audiences. In many of the homes I visit they are on TV frequently. Today "Dr" Phil was hosting a group of people in a shared house for a week. The show has chosen people who hate, fat people, gays, straight people and blacks. One for each hate group. Now they are going to live together for a week and get over their prejudices. I can't see this as other than exploitation. The producers want loud arguments, swearing and continuous conflict, that will bring high ratings and more money from the sponsors.
