Office called at 9am, would I take another 4 patients today. I said NO.
They emailed an hour later, would I take another one. NO
Just emailed again, with another patient, would I go. NO
I have a full caseload today.
Yesterday, I did 10 visits including an admission. Came home, had a bite to eat and then couldn't keep my eyes open. Went to bed, woke up at 10pm. Ate some more, read for a bit. Tried to go to bed, couldn't sleep. Ended up doing hand sewing in bed for an hour, before finally going to sleep about 4 am. This has been going on since then end of June. I have a life outside of work that is suffering because I am exhausted.
It's now 6 weeks since they knew that they were down one RN in the field. Plenty of time to find more staff. We are all getting toasted. Nurses are starting to call in sick more often. An RN retired last week, and another is going to be off indefinitely after her daughter was injured in a car accident.
Nurses get pushed to do more with less all the time. I'm not being a bitch, I'm trying to improve care. When we get pushed so hard, errors slip in, standards fall and fuck-ups happen. I posted about a few of these FU last week. There were more and I see new ones every damn day I visit.
There are supervisor who are nurses who can and should pickup the slack. Only when they are pushed will something be done to improve staffing.
nursing,
