But in fact there is nothing to be done and Tom Riddle is as Dumbledore assessed a boy on a path of destruction and not even Minerva McGonagall’s fierce love can help him and he releases the doves into the night, kisses her for the last time, and says You will never be enough.
She goes to Dumbledore’s office, where he has fallen asleep marking papers, and strips herself of her clothes in slow motion, and fucks him until he cries out her name in a demented parody of the way she and Tom made love, his wrinkles plentiful up-close and his body smelling of ink and cedar, nothing like Tom’s cologne, and then she vanishes-returns home, takes up teaching the local children, and is not heard from until she reappears looking for a job a few years later, lips pursed and hair bound and spectacles settled newly on her nose and bright laugh silenced forever.
And everyone-everyone knows what happened to Tom.
Do you love me? Or aren’t you the kind that tells?
