I had my first two kids with a midwife at Northwest Medical Center, and my third child with a doctor at TMC. I hated TMC. I was strapped down and put on all sorts of monitors, unable to walk around...
There is a labor and birthing room that's big and spacious, but after you have the baby, they take the baby to the nursery for tests (we protested and they said it was hospital policy, and we'd have him back in our arms in 20 minutes. 2 hours later... and my husband kept checking between me and going to the nursery to tell them to bring back our baby). Also, they wheel you to a teeny recover room that you may have to share with someone else. And if you've refused any of the "optional" screening tests during your pregnancy, they make you stay for 48 hours for "observation." I know people tell you "It's the outcome, the baby you bring home that matters" but I am still, almost two years later, very bitter about my birth at TMC.
At NW, I did all my laboring, delivering, and recovering in one room, and all the tests (except hearing) were done in my room with me watching. They never took either of my babies or made me stay because I didn't take any stupid screening tests.
As far as natural and attachment parenting, Dr. Nomaan is great. He has never given us a problem with co-sleeping, delaying vaccines, breastfeeding or delaying solids. He has offices all over Tucson, and the doctors he works with are amazing too.
If you are birthing at TMC for sure, I hope your experience is much better than mine was. Best of luck to you!
i've been seeing an OB/GYN (from UPH--delivers at UMC) and while i like her, i am nervous about the possibility of ending up with one of her partners on The Day.
i have heard mixed responses about TMC. i wonder whether it is any different if you have a midwife?
i will check out dr. nomaan. thanks for the tip! do you know whether he is veg-friendly?
My old midwife actually worked as a delivery nurse at TMC when I was there and from what she said, my delievery was pretty typical of all deliveries there, regardless of whether an OB or a midwife is present. :\
I'm not sure about Dr. Nomaan's stance on vegetarianism.. But he is very laid-back as far as aprenting goes, there's no solid "right" just what's right for your family. :)
Thanks for this information, we're wanting to get pregnant soon and it will be our first. We just moved here so we don't have a pool of people to question on these things.
