I really think that people should be forbidden from uttering the phrase "Don't be a stranger." It's the worst thing anyone could say to anyone else, really.
Back in 2003, someone had said this phrase to me, mainly because it possesses tendencies of a cliche. After two months, I never saw him again. He was a good cat. Sucks that he told me not to be a stranger when he was being a stranger the whole time.
Well, wouldn't you know it, it happened again.
You know who you are, so I'm gonna talk some shit about you this one time.
She said, "Don't be a stranger" as I was leaving her apartment. I was in the frame of mind that could very well have been the furthest thing from wanting to be a stranger. I had the most excellent time with her, and I thought there was something there. Because she lives in a different city, it's a little difficult to maintain high levels of contact, but, of course, there are alternatives. We got together again a few times when she came back to Toronto, and each time was better than the last. I was finally forced to show my hand, but nothing really happened from there. There were a couple of odd phone conversations; long and informative, but still odd. I think she blocked me over MSN. Then I called her up one evening last week. I was trying to play a song I wrote for her on my piano. It wasn't working because the most important note in the song is the stickiest note on my piano. She was to spend her reading week here in Toronto, and said she'd give me a call while she was around. You can probably guess the outcome of this story by now.
I think I can attribute it to her wanting to be a little deceitful. She's very good at leading people on, but hates doing it. She gets aloof when she has to explain herself. As brilliant as she is, you still don't get the whole story.
I seriously think that she doesn't want anything to do with me when I'm not around. Since we live in two different cities, it would be very easy for her to have that. Be that as it potentially may, wouldn't it be a good idea to be straight up about things and let me know what the dick is going on in her head? Isn't that what friends do? Of course, I use the term "friend" here loosely. It doesn't really feel like a friendship unless we both just happen to be in the same city. Even so, she and I were in the same city for a week last week, and there was NO communication.
Here's the kicker: One night, she had been talking to me about people that don't talk to her anymore, saying that it sucks, but whatever. I was intrigued to find out why this happens, but realized something really important that she left out of the story.
Darling, the reason why we don't talk anymore is not because I don't talk to you, but because you haven't made the greatest effort to talk to me. I had this strange feeling that you weren't gonna call at all. My intuition was right on the money this week. I see that you un-blocked me on MSN. At this point, I really don't care if you still want to talk to me or not. The reason being that you probably don't care to anyway. So, my question to you: Who's really being a stranger?
