Interesting rant... or maybe not

I know I take myself too seriously about things but perhaps I should rant for a bit. It's been a long time. This rant is basically a culmination of discussions I've had with Beth on the matter and an adaptation of some of the things she and I said, applied to college life and education in the US in general. Let's talk about practicality ; as much as you demonise 'Mr. 4.0 1600 Yale' , he is in fact required as one of the functioning cogs in the American machine. He is the accountant, the proctologist, the chemical engineer. Although emphasis on 'free thought' is a nice ideal for colleges, I don't feel it's necessarily something everyone should have to pursue. After all, for all you know they could have exercised their 'free thought' in coming to the decision to conform. I know we talked last night on the phone about hegemony and such, but I feel it may apply to these people to a great extent. By telling them that they should think a 'different' way, aren't you impugning about their right to free thought ? It's an interesting catch-22, not like the band , but still.

You make some legitimate points, and defend them, but at the same time the reader is left with only a rant about an imperfect yet functioning system. I think you need to read that ..Jesus thing that they post everywhere about 'accepting the things that we cannot change' . And, as you said, if you honestly dislike 'things' that much, you can always leave. Although on the surface it may seem cowardly, I feel it's the most noble solution of all. It'd actually hurt the system more to leave it than it would to 'fight'it with a sign.
