i've always felt the bible was tinkered with, so the leaders (or anyone) can alter the passages to put in what they want, to control what they don't like. now that i found some passages i've felt this more than ever

Speaking as a self-styled athiest, I think "god" is nothing more then something for people who don't have much, to hold on to. And organized religion is just a guy, telling a bunch of people what to believe or else they'll be punished by something that may or not be real.
The first guy was right in saying that modern Christians follow the New Testament. This is true because once Jesus died on the cross, the Old Covenant was no longer in use (or anything leading up to his death isn't the way it is anymore- including Leviticus and Exodus). We are now under the New Covenant.
The second girl was wrong because you do not have to donate money. The bible says if you want to you can/should, but only if you can do it happily. If you give the church money and don't want to, it's a waste.
If Christians are now under the "New Covenant", then why do Christians persist in using excerpts from books like leviticus to back the Marriage Defense Act? Why does the president? Even if the new testament holds anti-homosexual sentiment, why have Christians brought up the old testament in their defense AT ALL if the old covenant is done with, if Christians should now be living under the New Covenant?
1. Because most Christians don't really read the Bible.
2. Because many churches take things out of context to suit their own desires.
3. Because a Covenant is not a set of books; one can refer to parts of the Old Testament, because unless it is a 'law', it is just information concerning the Old Testament. It's like "this is how things used to be back in the day".
LOL are you kidding me? I'm a Christian, and you are not. Therefore I can rationally assume that you do not read the Bible. I read the Bible, I know what it says.
There is no church that 'requires' you to make a donation. If you do not donate, you do not get kicked out. Most churches pass around a collection or offering plate, but you are definitely in no way ever possibly forced to give them money. Haha, never.
I find it pleasantly amusing and somewhat alarming that someone so ignorant could possibly think they knew more about my religion when they don't practice it.
An idiot once said, "Check your information before you comment".
How do you know I wasn't raised Christian? How do you know, I haven't read the bible? Exactly, you have no fucking idea so stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
And yes, there are churches that 'require' you to make a donation. I know this first hand. I'm glad that you find it amusing and alarming since you're talking out of your ass.
You don't know me, you don't know what religion my family practices, therefore I expect you to actually try to know someone before you go making snap judgements.
And yes:

That's a snap judgement. When you assume, you make an ASS out of you and me. But in this case, you're just the ass :)
So, you read the Bible as an atheist? I did, in fact, make it in the present tense, meaning you do it now. I don't know many atheists that read the Bible.
But that's my last argument.
What kind of church requires you to make a donation; who would go to that kind of church; how do they back that up?
believe it or not, many people view the bible as just another text, and read it as such. a jewish friend of mine has (in addition to reading the torah straight through) read the whole bible and the koran. *feigned gasp* people actually read! this person is a regular person, not even a college student studying theology, so you would be wise not to assume that only believers read the bible.
there is a condescending tone present in your posts regarding atheists. way to love God's people as Jesus instructed!
And you have to donate money.
Seems iffy to me. No thank you.
