My brother sent me a link to a story about scammers taking advantage of Michael Jackson's death. And said in his email:
I suppose that, to be safe, you should make sure your anti-virus software is running before you click on the link :)
Anti-virus software? What's that? Oh, that stuff that people who use insecure operating systems have to use.
Jeez, I'm reading this article and all I can think is, what the fuck is wrong with you people? You go to a website, just surf there, and suddenly your operating system has been invaded? And this is somehow acceptable? The burden is on you to surf carefully? Because Microsoft somehow just can't figure out how to protect the OS from what userspace does?
I got a trojan in email the other day. And hey, guess what? My email program doesn't automatically run, aka "preview", attachments. I'm not aware of any email program for Linux that does that. But even if it did, the worst that could happen would be some damage to my personal files, because I don't run email or surf when I'm logged in as the system administrator, and in Linux, nothing can mess with the OS just by running with the permissions of a user account. Unix has been doing things that way since the 1970's. When is Microsoft going to catch up?
And hell, Microsoft keeps sending out the patches, and some users use them, but even in a corporate environment where professionals are taking care of the systems, malware still gets through. Our whole corporate network got invaded earlier this year. Two of us, out of 40 in my office, had to send our machines out to be cleaned, and we lost hundreds of dollars from bogus print jobs on the color printer. And did anyone say, hey, maybe we should look into the alternatives? They did not. Oh well, we got some viruses, such is life, business as usual, this is normal. So widespread is the Microsoft monopoly, nearly everyone believes that this is normal, unavoidable, just one of the costs of doing business. You got a computer? You gotta worry about viruses. End of story.
