Buffy tried not to snicker as she watched the interplay between the Malfoy kid and her sister. The two of them were so snarky to each other that it was hilarious. Neither had been willing to fess up the whole story of how they had ended up assigned as permanent potions partners, but she was fairly sure Professor Slughorn would be telling her during their meeting that afternoon.

Assuming he didn’t do himself an injury trying not to laugh out loud during this session, that was. A quick glance around the room told her it was amazing there weren’t more potions being ruined through inattention, and not due to the presence of the famous Slayer. The Summers/Malfoy double act was clearly the best entertainment going at Hogwarts this semester. No wonder the good professor had thought she should see it firsthand.

Buffy recognized where this was heading. They were dancing around each other, covering with sarcasm and sneers, but sooner or later they’d drop the pretense. Time to polish up her shovel speech, and give the Scoobies a heads-up. Willow was going to love threatening the ‘ferret-faced git who wouldn’t know lacewing from mayflies if they bit his pale arse’.

Dawn sighed. She was really tired of hearing them have this same fight over and over again. Ok, so her sister was pregnant. That was wonderful, doubly so since none of them had ever expected she’d actually live long enough and settle down with a guy who’d make such a wonderful father as her fiancé clearly would. Everyone had been thrilled to hear the good news.

But that still didn’t mean Buffy could walk away from what she was. Slayer, The. Tony clearly didn’t get that. Their father didn’t seem to, either. He’d been pressuring her too, albeit gently. Dawn understood they meant well, but all they were doing was adding more stress to Buffy’s already frazzled state of mind.

Enough was enough. Intervention time- Scooby style. Willow and Xander were in town, and it shouldn’t be too hard to get Ziva onside. They’d make it clear to Tony and Gibbs. Buffy couldn’t quit slaying, even if she wanted to. The dance between the Slayer and the vampire was as old as time, and unlike more conventional dances, there was no cutting in, and no sitting out once the music started. Once you were Called, there was no other choice.
