Dawn had been cursing her rotten luck. She’d been on a train in an underground tunnel for close to thirty minutes. She was on her way back from a day out at Caprica Beach. When word of what was happening reached the Sunshine Express, people started to panic. Dawn didn’t. Several hours later, when she emerged from the comparative safety of the tunnel, she thanked every deity she knew that her train hadn’t been on time. If the frakking train hadn’t been running fifty-five minutes late, she’d have been in Caprica City when the Cylons turned it into radioactive dust.

Kara Thrace - Starbuck to nearly everyone - rested her head against her locker. She had just offered her prayers to the Lords of Kobol for the dead. Especially Lee and Dawn. It hadn’t been quite right, though. The only figures she had were Athena and Artemis- her own Lords. She should have had two others. Her friend and her sister deserved to have prayers for them made to the gods they had been dedicated to.
She flung herself into her rack and pulled the curtain as tight shut as she could. No one on Galactica was going to see her cry.

Kara knew she was dreaming. Dawn was dead, one of the hundreds of millions who had died on Caprica. Seeing her like this, like she was really there, made her want to break down and cry again.
“Dawnie, what are you doing here?”
Dawn wrinkled her nose.
“Can’t I want to talk to my sister?”
“I’m dreaming.”
“Duh, Captain Obvious.”
Dawn’s tone harkened back to childhood, a petulant tween instead of the confident eighteen year old she should have been. She’d just been about to join the Fleet herself. She’d been joking that Starbuck would have competition soon.
“You don’t look so good, Kara.”
“Well excuse me. It’s been a bit of a rough time lately.”
Dawn snorted.
“Tell me about it. At least you were well clear of all the nukes and the fun that comes with them.”
“It’s not much better out here. I’ll probably be joining you soon.”
“Yeah, about that- make sure you bring plenty of anti-radiation meds when you do.”
Kara had no idea where that had come from.
“I’ll need them in the afterlife?”
Dawn rolled her eyes.
“I’m not dead, stupid. It’s a good thing your other skill involves being a kickass pilot.”
