tthdrabbles county/state fair challenge
He'd debated with himself all summer. He'd gotten out of Sunnydale. How easy it would be just not to go back. Buffy and Willow were going to college. He wasn't. Buffy was SlayGal. Willow was learning the witchy stuff. Maybe not so good yet, but hey, she'd souled Angelus...so the potential was there. Him. He was the bait. Oh, and Buffy's living punching bag when Giles didn't feel like it. And donut fetcher. They didn't need him.
He ignored the carnies running the games calling out as he walked down the Midway. He wasn't sure why he'd come, he hadn't been to a fair in years. He'd been fourteen the last time...with Jesse Willow and Jesse's folks.
"Mind if I sit?"
The red headed boy looked up confused for a moment. "Nah, sit" he looked about Xander's age and had eyes just as haunted.
They sat watching people go by in silence.
"Waiting for someone?"
"Nah, by myself. Just remembering." Xander shrugged realizing how stupid that sound.
"Remembering what?"
"Fairs my two best friends and I went to when we were little"
The other boy nodded.
"You?"
"Never been to one. Mac and Tessa were more the Opera types"

Looking back later Xander supposed it was odd. He'd just sat on the bench to--well, do an Angel impression and brood. Somehow, they'd ended up talking in a wary waiting for the other to kill them sort of way. Ended up going on a few rides and ate far too many corndogs and cotton candy which might be silly and little kiddish but it wasn't a fair without cotton candy Xander insisted remembering how sick he, Willow, and Jesse had gotten from eating way too much cotton candy as kids. It'd been surprisingly fun.
The big guy looking for trouble. Richie tried to talk his way out of it. Big'N' Ugly insisted. Richie snapped that Xander had no part of it. Big and Ugly wanted Xander to come along as well.
Swords. Decapitation. Lightning. Brief explanation of Immortals, Watchers and the Game from a still-trembling Richie when it was over. Weird found him even away from the Hellmouth it seemed and at least Richie wasn't a demon.
Richie had left shortly after, not wanting identified by a Watcher. Xander understood that. Xander found himself back on the highway driving towards Sunnydale after that. Even if the girls didn't need him, he couldn't walk away from helping them.
