The rain fell in sheets as the storm raged, the ship bombarded by giant waves. The wind ripped through the sails, the material straining. It was one of the worst storms they had come across, bested only by the storm that had been created by the goddess Calypso.

Even as the water drenched his clothes and almost blinded his eyes, Jack smirked as he heard a thin voice shrieking over the din,

“I’m on a boat in the middle of a freaking storm! A storm! I’m going to kill Willow. Do you know what this is doing to my hair?”

“Let me get this straight,” Anamaria said dryly, one eyebrow raised. “You’re a Slayer. You kill vampires and ‘slimy creepy things that ruin shoes’ as you’ve said. You’ve done it for years and killed countless creatures. And you cannot deal with this?”

Her last words were punctuated with a gesture towards the fish Gibbs had caught. Buffy wrinkled her nose, stepping back. “But it moves and you have to cut off the head! I slay, not kill fish! That’s not in my contract.”

“You’re a pirate now,” Anamaria pointed out with a grin. “All contracts are off. Enjoy the fish.”

His steps were calculating as he stepped aboard the ship - his ship - he corrected himself, his gaze studying the scene of front of him, double-checking to make sure that Jack’s hands were tied tightly together.

The rest of his crew were being watched carefully, with the exception of a blonde lying partially sprawled across the ground. Barbossa smirked and stepped closer to her, his gun loose in his hand.

“Ah, you must be the infamous Miss Summers,” he announced loudly, stopping within a few footsteps of her. “I’ve heard much about you. Frankly, I can’t say I’m impressed, what with you laying here sleeping while my crew takes over your ship.”

He barely had time to acknowledge the laughter from his crew when, in the blink of an eye, Barbossa found himself on the ground, his own gun pressed firmly against his forehead. With him suddenly on the ground, his crew members slackened their holds on their enemies in surprise, giving those held captive enough time to attack. Even with the sudden chaos around him, Barbossa lifted his gaze to find himself staring into the coldest pair of eyes he’d ever encountered.

“First impressions are a bitch, aren’t they?”

The fire of the cannon was deafening.

The sound was unlike any Buffy had experienced. With the exception of the rocket launcher she had used to destroy the Judge, Buffy had never used a weapon that made that noise. Her battles had included her witty remarks, the growling of the demons and, most recently, the screams of the other Slayers as they were killed. Screams that haunted Buffy, waking her up in the middle of the night drenched in a sweat.

She didn’t mind the boom of the cannon; it drowned out any screams that would add to her nightmares.

He was standing at the bow of the ship when she found him.

The sun was almost down as she stepped next to him, leaning against the rail. She stole a glance at him, though gleaned nothing as his face was covered in shadows from the dying of the sunlight. Yet she could feel the intensity radiating from him, knew the expression on his face was hardly the usual expression found on the captain’s face.

“Have you lost a lot of crew members?” Buffy asked softly, knowing her words were blunt, but unable to devise another way to ask. The battle had been won, but at high cost. Crew members she had begun to think of as good friends had been killed. Crew he had sailed with for years.

Jack was silent for a moment before answering, “Aye. Many. I remember all of them.”

Surprised at his immediate response, she felt herself nodding, her own gaze drifting to the darkening waves. “I’ve lost many people in my battles. Friends, family, students. All of their faces are imprinted in me, knowing what they sacrificed just to save others.”

There was no response. Silence passed between them, the Captain and the Slayer.
