Yesterday, Lee and I went to Petsmart to look at the available kittens, because we were thinking of adopting one after my parents leave, next Monday. Instead, we ended up coming home, yesterday (i.e. before my parents visit), with not one kitten but TWO.
Two adorable, 4-5 month old kittens who are currently laying on top of each other, sprawled, next to me while I type this. I couldn't update yesterday because it took us until this morning to finalize their names:
Mica (a.k.a.
Missy) is a little black female, medium hair, born 3/16/09, who someone abandoned in a bag outside of a pet store. She is slightly shy but very sweet. We brought them home around 4 pm yesterday, and she spent the afternoon and evening under the bed except when chasing a feather toy, which apparently was enough fun that she temporarily got over being scared of the new environment. But she ended up sleeping with us in the bed last night, finally ate around 6 a.m., and seems to be adjusting now...at least to us and our bedroom; she's not at all interested in exploring this thing called a dog that she has seen a couple of times through the baby gate. She came up to Lexi once yesterday, hissed a few times, and proceeded to run back under the bed.
Her step-brother is Ringo (a.k.a.
Brutus), a large, short haired gray/brown tabby, born 3/2/09. It is obvious that he is the older one of the pair, and he is significantly more brave. He explored every corner of the room right after coming out of the carrier we brought them home in, and his interest in Lexi is the only reason we kept the door open for them to interact as long as they did through the baby gate. He is also a little escape artist, and has already jumped over the baby gate to try to explore the rest of the house - Lexi included. But they've only had very supervised, minor interactions so far...we want the introductions to be gradual so that they end up as friends, not enemies.
So far, we are keeping the kittens in our bedroom with the door closed, and this is the plan for the next week or so - although Ringo might end up exploring the rest of the house far sooner than that (at least if he has his desires). Lexi is already not used to being in our bedroom except for in her crate at night, so this isn't too big of a displacement for her. Last night, however, she was kicked out - she slept in her crate in Katie's room (but this isn't entirely without precedent; Lexi slept in a crate in Katie's room whenever I spent the night at Lee's or when he spent the night over here last summer). They figured out where the little box was, and both found the water bowl before we went to bed last night, so hopefully it won't be too difficult of a transition. We had to clean a bunch right after we brought them home, since it wasn't exactly anticipated, but now everything seems at least halfway kitten-proof. Mica has already discovered the cords on the blinds, though, so we'll see how that goes.
I only have one picture so far because we can't find the camera cable, so this is a grainy cell-phone one:
More photos to come!
