Title: Mascot TV
Characters/pairings: Agnes and the heroes.
Words: 1440
Rating: G
Request: I'd prefer something fairly light-hearted; maybe some sort of hero ensemble shenanigans? I don't ship anything particularly vehemently, so whatever you feel most comfortable with would work just fine for me!
Notes: I hope this can live up to what you expected! It's set at some time between episode 09 and episode 10.
The call from Agnes got everyone out of bed very early in the morning; except for Dragon Kid who was already up and awkwardly standing around Agnes in the gym, not looking directly at her. The heroes jumped into action immediately, in whatever place they were at the moment, trying to get into their suits without even knowing the nature of the emergency.
“Don’t bother wearing your suits, Heroes,” Agnes said into the receiver of her speakerphone. “Just come to the gym as soon as possible.”
Less than ten minutes later, the arrival of Origami Cyclone and Fire Emblem brought a bit of light into the issue: Dragon Kid was standing in her usual get up holding a small kitten in her hands. The kitten seemed intent on rubbing its little mane against Dragon Kid’s hands and wrists and the girl looked uncomfortable at best. Blue Rose entered just a minute after that and she rushed back to the farthest wall as soon as she saw the cat.
“Is this your emergency?” she said, looking at Agnes in disbelief. Agnes shot back a look of grown-up superiority.
“Let’s wait until everyone is here before I explain what the emergency is,” she said in a smug voice. Blue Rose pouted in response.
The rest of the heroes trickled into the room in the following minutes. All except Wild Tiger who was still missing thirty minutes after the call was made. Barnaby’s mood seemed to be darkening by the minute just as Sky High’s spirits seemed to be encouraged. Everyone’s patience was starting to run thin, Rock Bison looked at his watch discreetly and Fire Emblem looked at Bison’s ass in similar manner. Agnes clicked her nails against the closest horizontal surface, rapping away for almost a minute and then sighed.
“Okay, we’ll start without Wild Tiger then,” she began. “Dragon Kid found a kitten in her porch last night and we must decide what could be done with it.”
“Why can’t she decide for herself?” Blue Rose muttered staring at the kitty with distrustful eyes. Dragon Kid looked apprehensive.
“I can’t keep it and I didn’t know what to do! My manager didn’t answer my calls and I think it was hungry,” she replied, a bit flustered. “I don’t want to hurt it. I can’t take care of small living beings.”
“It’s not so hard to feed them or clean after them,” Sky High observed. Everyone recalled he owned a dog, and a big one to top it off.
“Besides, if I recall correctly you managed to take care of the Major’s baby just fine,” Fire Emblem said, inching closer to her. He reached out and tickled the kitty under its chin, making it purr. “Aw, it’s so adorable. Have you checked if it’s a boy or a girl?”
“I think you’re deviating from the point of this meeting,” Bison interrupted. “So you called us to decide what to do with the cat, I suppose?” Agnes nodded.
“My first idea was to send it to a shelter, but Dragon Kid refused that option and insisted on everyone deciding together.”
“If that is what she wants, then we should humor her,” Barnaby said with a smile, his dark mood appeared to have magically vanished. Dragon Kid blushed.
“Well said, handsome!” Fire Emblem clapped. “What do you suggest we do then?”
Then room erupted into a chatter of male voices that overpowered each other. Agnes had the presence of mind to not look too annoyed. Blue Rose didn’t. Dragon Kid bit her lower lip and looked down at the kitten in her hands licking her fingers away and mentally apologized for bringing this onto herself and the rest of the heroes. Wild Tiger entered the room right at that moment, making silence fall deadly.
“I apologize for coming in so late, Agnes-san,” he exclaimed and even bowed his head to show how truly ashamed he was. “There was a traffic jam and I took an alternative route, but then--”
“We don’t need to hear your excuses, Tiger,” Agnes raised her hand to stop him from saying any more. “Let’s just solve this situation quickly so we can all go back to whatever it was we were doing.” She tried not to sigh again or rub her temples just to keep Dragon Kid from bursting into tears.
“Like I was saying,” Barnaby continued. “We should decide on someone to take it home with them.”
Everyone stilled, hoping whoever got picked, it wasn’t them. Agnes shook her head. “That I already considered and sadly you all lead too hectic lives to take care of anyone. Sky High manages, but he can’t take care of two,” she stopped to consider and then stared at Origami Cyclone. “You’ve been too quiet.”
Origami feared the question she might ask and then made himself look exactly as Agnes. The real Agnes gasped, shocked and her expression turned twisted. “So this is how you want to play it?”
Tiger, who had been temporarily distracted by Sky High and Rock Bison explained the situation to him, turned around to found two Agnes staring at each other haughtily.
“Aaah!” he screamed in surprise. Both Agnes turned to look at him. “Eh, Agnes-san...” he trailed off looking between Origami and the real Agnes. He decided on Origami accidentally.
“I am really sorry but I don’t think I can take it either!” he bowed again. “I already have a daughter and she’s living away.” Blue Rose burst into laughter behind him, Fire Emblem followed suit.
“Tiger, you idiot.” The real Agnes muttered. “I’m here!” This time she did rub her temples and sighed. “My original plan was to turn the kitten into a HeroTV mascot and have you all spend time with it behind cameras, but as far as I can see that’ll be a disaster.”
Origami turned back to his own looks. “I didn’t know you’ve thought that far, Agnes-san.” He looked innocent enough to make Agnes doubt she was being complimented. She sighed again, today was turning worse by the minute.
“Blue Rose, would you mind looking after it?” Agnes said, defeated.
“Impossible. I’m allergic.” Blue Rose huffed.
Agnes walked to one of the press benches and sat down, legs folded neatly to a side. “It would be impossible to ask any of you, so we either take it to a shelter or--”
“What about turning it into a mascot for HeroTV and then doing a contest to give it up on adoption?” Tiger interrupted. Agnes looked at him as if he’d grown a second head. The rest of the heroes seemed to be turning the idea in their heads.
“No, that’s the most stupid thing I’ve heard,” Agnes replied.
“I think it sounds great,” Sky High said. “It would make a kid happy and the kitten will have an owner.”
After Sky High accepted, everyone was eager to support the idea. Bison nodded eagerly as Fire Emblem chattered about the different ways in which they could organize the contest. Blue Rose only listened absently, stealing glances towards Wild Tiger once or twice. Origami kept silent in case Agnes remembered the recent occurrence and decided to take measures against him.
“What do you think then, Dragon Kid?” Agnes asked, exhaustion in her voice. Dragon Kid stared at the kitten in her hands again and the kitten stared back with a barely audible meow. Fire Emblem aw’ed again. Dragon Kid smiled and nodded.
“Sounds good!” She said. Agnes nodded back and stood up, making her way towards the door to exit the room. Barnaby, Sky High and Fire Emblem followed, discussing plans.
“This will be great advertising for the show,” Barnaby conceded. “I suggest making everyone pose for pictures and then having a voting. The one with more votes should get extra points.”
“Nice and nice again, Barnaby!” Sky High commented. Their voices turned into a murmur as they walked away. Blue Rose took one last glance at Tiger before leaving the room in an agitated rush. Origami had taked the kitten out of Dragon Kid’s hands and they were both now in the corner petting the precious thing and gushing quietly.
“I can’t believe you were that late,” Bison broke the silence first. Wild Tiger let himself slouch against one of the threadmills supporting bars.
“You, too? Give me a break already!” Tiger complained. Bison sighed and left the room, following the others at his own pace. Tiger sighed, it was the trend lately, and then fixed his hat. At least they’d solved the emergency.
“Later,” he waved at the kids and walked out of the room whistling.
