Background: Jessica is the child of Krauss Ushiromiya, the man who’s first in line of succession to the wealthy and powerful Ushiromiya family, and his wife Natsuhi. Now, the Ushiromiyas are not just wealthy and powerful- they’re also one big horribly fucked-up and dysfunctional big family. Not only is Jessica’s mother Natsuhi in rarely happy and often gets headaches due to being an extremely difficult position, she’s disrespected and her efforts are often ignored by her husband, whose failure as an investor puts up a lot of stress on her, and who is largely disliked by his siblings for being manipulative. In addition, the head of the family and father to Krauss and his three siblings in a complete dick who’s always been abusive towards his children, even when they are all adults, which of course led to the other siblings developing their own issues and their families being even more unstable then Krauss’.
So naturally, Jessica grew up in a rather difficult environment. Her father is emotionally distant towards her and their relationship is quite bad, (though he clearly cares for her much more than she thinks he does- he just very rarely gets to show this). She lives under a lot of pressure from Natsuhi to be suitable heiress to the family and is frequently lectured, and never seems to properly satisfy her. In other words, she's a classic case of a teenager who is misunderstood by her parents, a "why can't my parents accept me for who I am and not who they want me to be?" scenario. The only place Jessica can feel comfortable is school, when she's highly popular and the student body president, and she leads a rock band where she plays guitar and sings.
On Rokkenjima, the island owned by her family and where she lives, she finds a female friend in a young servant named Shannon, and falls in love with her little brother, also a servant, named Kanon. However, both of them view themselves as nothing but mere furniture, and believe that they should not be able to fall in love; this belief is especially strong in Kanon, who, unknown to her, develops feelings for Jessica too and is ashamed of them. That's why, when she indirectly confesses she is initially met with rejection, and is deeply heartbroken as a result. But she doesn't allow this to change their relationship, and keeps on loving him regardless, while convinced that he will never return them- and while this hurts her, she accepts it.
During October 1986, the Ushiromiya family conference, she meets up with the rest of her family and her three cousins, George, Battler, and Maria, children of Krauss' three siblings; the four build up a very stable and good relationship together, and easily become good friends- a very stark contrast to the large amount of resentment, animosity and dislike between their parents.
Personality: Jessica is often described, both in-universe and outside the games, as a "tsundere"; which is a term for a specific sort of stock character. In short, this kind of character is very tough and mean on the outside, but kind-hearted and sweet on the inside. Unlike others, however, Jessica is not violent out of affection towards her crush, and her personality was developed for different reasons then most of the other character of this type. Simply put, Jessica has the mind of a stereotypical teenage girl, and it seems that that's what she is, but not quite. She is a girl who's going through a very difficult stage in life, and it shows, and her difficult relationship with her parents does not make things much better. Jessica does not deal with this by sulking, not at all- instead, her way of dealing with the problems of her life is by rebellion.
Even as a child she would go against her parents' expectations- for instance, Jessica uses masculine speech manners, which makes her sound very bold and her speech quite rough and unrefined. She's obviously very tomboyish, often rude, assertive and brash- in general, she behaves in a manner which is considered highly unfeminine- in a time where there are greater gender barriers then nowadays as the story takes place in 1986, and in a culture which places a particular amount of emphasis on politeness and dignity, especially in women, even nowadays. Her fighting style is said to be very "unfitting for a lady", and she gets called "just half a man", to her total uncaring. It's clear that she behaves the way a man is expected to as a form of rebellion, and she openly shows no interest in meeting her mother's expectations or succeeding the Ushiromiya family, not in the least, and gets very irritated when the subject is brought up, which is frequent as Natsuhi often lectures her about her speech and other things that she deems inappropriate for a future heiress, much to her annoyance.
Jessica is a tough, strong girl both physically and mentally. She doesn't allow herself to be passive to simply accept things the way they are if she’s unhappy; she refuses to give up (she said herself that "'Give up' isn’t written anywhere in my dictionary!") and fights the best she can. She's proved herself to be very determined and strong when she gets serious, and refuses to show the venerable, saddened or emotional side to people, a part of her that can only be brought out by very specific people, circumstances and reasons. Even when Kanon rejects her, as gently as he can, she refuses to cry in front of him, and she goes great lengths to at least gain his respect. Whenever distressed she puts on a tough act to cover any weakness or melancholy, and appears easily irritated. And all this is one side of her, one half of her personality- the hot-tempered rebellious tough girl, which, while cannot be called an act, as it’s quite genuine, is only part of her personality, and whenever she wants to hide her true feelings she uses it as a mask.
The other half of her personality is probably only seen outside of Rokkenjima, in any place without the presence of her family- places where she can feel comfortable. She herself described it; that she created another self, another side of her on the inside that could be relaxed and worry-free. This side of her is, to put it more pretentiously, her "true self", because it's what Jessica is actually like inside; an energetic, bright, cheerful and lively young woman, who has a very relaxed and carefree approach to life, with a sociable, fun-loving and friendly personality that earns her many friends. She loves to tease and make fun of her friends, but in a fond manner, completely unrestrained and always speaks her mind, which includes being quite vulgar at times. And while she still uses masculine speech patterns and is quite tomboyish, she has a feminine, childlike side that shows through at times.
Jessica has said that whenever she's that other part of herself, she can really feel like she's enjoying herself, and having a good time, contrast to the constrained, subdued version of herself that she acts like during boring everyday life. There are moments where Jessica displays maturity and an ability to understand what is going on in people's hearts; proof that she's quite smart and very capable when she gets serious and if she really puts her mind to it. But she's still very young, very naive and inexperienced at heart, which can be both good and bad as she's been willing to sacrifice herself several times when she felt that she had to, but tends to let her emotions get the better of her and is quick to jump headfirst into situations without thinking.
Abilities: Jessica is once hundred percent normal human being. AKA: None. …Nothing supernatural that Mayfield will have to take away, at least. As far as normal abilities she's a very skilled fighter, especially with brass knuckles, knows some boxing like her father, and knows how to play guitar and sing quite well.
