An Excerpt of Chapter 2

“If want another ride, just ask, okay?” the pretty boat-oar-rider chirped with a wink before walking off very quickly again.

Little blue eyes huge, Shinobu gave her a tiny nod.

But how could he follow that agreement? It was so dazzling here! Certainly, the halls were long and twisting, but they had many turns, which must have meant a lot to see. Maybe there was a library full of picture books in one hall! Or a place where a bunch of puppies lived! Best of all, there might be a vending machine, and Shinobu found those huge, beeping machines so grand!

Quietly and cautiously, he trailed down the never ending lavender hallway Miss Miho had taken him to, tripping now and then because he was so excited and nervous to inspect the area.

Once he had finally arrived by the huge hallway that he had assumed led to a vending machine, Shinobu’s eyes bulged and a mix of a whimper and gasp escaped his mouth. This was definitely not the vending machine area of the palace!

They were huge creatures, with nervous faces and lots of huge warts that terrified Shinobu. Were these, perhaps, what real frog princes looked like? No, because they weren’t princes! Covered in pale blue skin, they didn’t look particularly caring to little Shinobu, either.

Unfortunately for him, judging by the stare they were giving, it didn’t look like his gasping cry had gone unheard.

“A…kid?” One of the huge monsters wobbled over, and Shinobu did the first defensive thing he could think of. Clawing at the air as fiercely as he could manage, Shinobu growled out “Roar! I’m…uh…a carob!”

All of the blue monsters looked at him funny. Good, they were stunned! Perhaps they wouldn’t realize that he wasn’t a real carob (Whatever those were, he couldn’t remember at the time), but just a little boy, and he could get out of this hallway and go find Miss Yuri for his wonderful present. That wouldn’t be so bad.

“A…carob?” asked the biggest monster, slowly walking over to him. Flinching in terror, the boy nodded with his bright blue eyes shut tightly in fear as his caramel hands shot out to protect himself. “Yeah! I-I’m a carob monster! Growl!”

Seeing that this defensive tactic was failing him, Shinobu pulled out his best trick of all - his energy shield. Since he’d first seen a monster, Shinobu could create make huge, round shields around himself to kill of bad things that tried to hurt him (and they always were) and keep himself safe out of thin air. And he wasn’t afraid to do it here!

Bzzzzzz! In no time, a purple-tinted dome surrounded the child in warmth and a sense of security. There, now he was safe from those evil ogres! Oh, they were scared, alright - their ugly eyes were bigger than his favorite chocolate chip cookies!

“See, see? You shouldn’t go challenging carobs, you dumb monsters! They’re real strong! So go away!” Shinobu shouted, putting some effort into his attempt at a menacing pout.

“You’re…a child,” one of the big creatures gasped in a deep, bumbling voice. Uh oh, they were on to him! Perhaps a more threatening disposition would save him.

“No, no, I’m definitely a carob,” Shinobu assured sweetly before bouncing around in his violet shield, yelling “growl, growl, growl” repetitively. Most monsters ran right into his shield and died, but these ones were obviously a bit smarter than that. Due to his lack of other tricks, Shinobu had resorted to that carob act would shoo them away.

Gyah! What was that? Oof, Shinobu felt something forcefully grab the back of crimson shirt collar be snatched up and held lazily above the periwinkle carpet - along with Shinobu.

“What’ve we got here?” someone muttered, smirking.

Crap, I still have ap age to type and seven after that to create.

Kept changing young Shin's persona from quiet-kawaii to loud-and-caroby-kawaii. Have come to the lame excuse that it has to do with his fears, which are mentioned later. Plus, serious people can be extremely hyper as kids. I was WAY more hyped in fifth grade than I am these days, which must scare you guys, but... Well, it's my style, and Shinobu is not as serious here, because he's little, confused, and the plot needs to stay interesting. He can't be a boring little kid. :P I'm a pretty lame, self-absorbed writor, aren't I?

I later found out that Shinobu wasn't hired until in high school, but that was five pages into this flashback, and I have to get teh grade for thsi workshop, plus it explains Shinobu's job with an easier connection to his tohughts before the flashbacks, and my class needs that to get his job, PLUS it's interesting and CUTE. Yeah... *coughcough* Koenma doesn't seem very comfortable handling him, as he's either a bit odded out and unsure or smirking and thinking little Shin is silly. OR getting mad at Yuri, the random ferrygirl, for obsessively coddling him (Well, all my made-ups have SOME personality trait in them). Give me thoughts, but if I need to change somethign drastic it probably won't happen will mean a lot of time waiting for the next chapter.
