~July, 2012~
Perfectly planned, Hyun-Ah thinks, beaming. Resplendent in a snow white dress, one of her current stylists works on her hair and makeup.
“I’m glad that you’re here, unni.” Hyun-Ah says softly. “I trust you most of all.” She addresses the woman working on her hair, threading diamonds into her dark hair and weaving her veil in place. The door flies open, and Jaekyung dashes in, dressed in a midnight blue dress.
“Hyun-Ah!” Jaekyung exclaims.
“Yes, Jaekyung?” Hyun-Ah replies, eyes closed as her stylist applies makeup on her face.
“Ooooh. You’re pretty.” Jaekyung says randomly. “You’ve really outdone yourself this time, unni.” She says to the stylist.
The stylist smiles, “Thank you.” She has worked with Hyun-Ah since she was 21 - 6 years of working together. By now, she knows how to use makeup to cause natural beauty to shine through.
“Not long now, Hyun. I won’t be able to call you Park Hyun-Ah anymore.” Jaekyung pouts.
Hyun-Ah laughs, standing up. The dress cascades gently around her ankles, and her veil covers her hair at the back, held in place by a band of pearls and diamonds. SME actually helped fund her wedding, because she had agreed to keep her contract. The door opens quietly, and Hyun-Ah turns, lighting up at the people waiting there in the doorway.
“Umma! Appa!” Hyun-Ah smiles happily. Her mother and father walk towards her, engulfing her in a tight hug.
“You’re all grown up now, Hyun-Ah.” Her mother weeps.
“Shall we go now?” Hyun-Ah says, tugging on her father’s arm. “Jaekyung, I think Min is probably waiting for you.” She says.
Jaekyung gasps. “Oh, right! Good luck!” She exclaims, dashing out again. Hyun-Ah laughs.
“Umma, appa, thank you so much. I love you both so much.” Hyun-Ah says, hugging them both again. Her mother nods.
“I’ll go wait in my position. Hyun-Ah, you’ll always be my little baby.” Her mother sniffs, slowly walking out of the room. Her father offers his arm to her, and they meet up with Hyun-Ah’s four bridesmaids and Kyuhyun’s four groomsmen in the foyer of their church. The processional music starts, and they all know that it’s time for the parents of the groom and the mother of the bride to be seated. Eunjae and Jaebeom are the first ones to proceed down the aisle, followed by Miyoung and Ryeowook. After they reach the altar, Junghwa and Han Geng walk towards their respective sides. Jaekyung and Sungmin are the last to enter, as the maid of honor and the best man. Two children, Hyun-Ah’s young twin cousins, are the flower girl and ring bearer, and they skip their way down the aisle, much to the amusement of the audience. Finally, the music changes to the wedding march, and Hyun-Ah smiles nervously at her father before stepping past the doors.
“All rise for the bride.” The minister announces, and Hyun-Ah begins the long walk to the altar. Once they reach the end of the aisle, the minister begins the formal ceremony.
“We are gathered here in the sight of God and these witnesses to unite Kyuhyun and Hyun-Ah in holy matrimony. As followers of Jesus Christ, they believe that God created marriage. In Genesis it says, ‘It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’ Kyuhyun and Hyun-Ah, as you prepare to take these vows, give careful thought and prayer, for as you make them you are making an exclusive commitment one to the other for as long as you both shall live. Your love for each other should never be diminished by difficult circumstances, and it is to endure until death parts you. As God's children, your marriage is strengthened by your obedience to your Heavenly Father and His Word. As you let God be in control of your marriage, He will cause your home to be a place of joy and a testimony to the world.” The minister recites.
“Let us pray. Our Father, love has been Your richest and greatest gift to the world. Love between a man and woman which matures into marriage is one of Your most beautiful types of loves. Today we celebrate that love. May your blessing be on this wedding service. Protect, guide, and bless Kyuhyun and Hyun-Ah in their marriage. Surround them and us with Your love now and always. Amen.”
“You may be seated.” There is shuffling around as the congregation seats itself. “Who gives this woman to be married to this man?” the minister asks.
“I do.” Hyun-Ah’s father replies, as Hyun-Ah releases her father’s hand and moves towards Kyuhyun, who beams brilliantly.
“We will begin by singing a song of worship.” The congregation obediently follows the minister, singing through two songs. “Please join hands and face me.” He addresses Hyun-Ah and Kyuhyun, who link hands and turn to face the minister.
“I charge you both, as you stand in God's presence, to remember that love and loyalty alone will serve as the foundations of a happy and enduring home. If the solemn vows which you are about to make are kept permanently, and if you steadfastly seek to do the will of your Heavenly Father, your life will be full of peace and joy, and the home which you are establishing will abide through every change.” The minister says solemnly, looking intently at both Kyuhyun and Hyun-Ah. They both nod slightly in acknowledgement of his charge.
“Kyuhyun and Hyun-Ah, you have made a very serious and important decision in choosing to marry each other today. You are entering into a sacred covenant as life partners in God. The quality of your marriage will reflect what you put into nurturing this relationship. You have the opportunity to go forward from this day to create a faithful, kind, and tender relationship. We bless you this day. It is up to you to keep the blessings flowing each and every day of your lives together. We wish for you the wisdom, compassion, and constancy to create a peaceful sanctuary in which you can both grow in love.”
“Kyuhyun, do you understand and accept this responsibility, and do you promise to do your very best each day to create a loving, healthy, and happy marriage?” The minister asks Kyuhyun.
“Yes, I do.” Kyuhyun inclines his head, both determination and love in his eyes as he turns slightly to look at Hyun-Ah.
“Hyun-Ah, do you understand and accept this responsibility, and do you promise to do your very best each day to create a loving, healthy, and happy marriage?” Hyun-Ah is addressed this time.
“Yes, I do.” Hyun-Ah says softly but firmly, squeezing Kyuhyun’s hand slightly, inclining her head up to meet his eyes.
“Please face each other.” The minister says. “We will now exchange the wedding vows. Kyuhyun, if you would begin, please.” Kyuhyun and Hyun-Ah turn to face each other, holding each others’ hands.
“In the name of Jesus, I, Cho Kyuhyun, take you, Park Hyun-Ah, to be my wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, for as long as we both shall live. This is my solemn vow.” Kyuhyun says in his deep voice, staring deeply into Hyun-Ah’s eyes the whole time. She smiles gently up at him, tilting her head slightly.
“Thank you. Hyun-Ah, please.” The minister continues.
“In the name of Jesus, I, Park Hyun-Ah, take you, Cho Kyuhyun, to be my husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, for as long as we both shall live. This is my solemn vow.” Hyun-Ah recites clearly but tenderly, her higher voice carrying across the congregation in spite of its volume.
“May I have the rings.” The little ring bearer hastily hands the minister the box containing the wedding rings. “Let us pray. Bless, O Lord, the giving and receiving of these rings. May Kyuhyun and Hyun-Ah abide in Thy peace and grow in their knowledge of Your presence through their loving union. May the seamless circle of these rings become the symbol of their endless love and serve to remind them of the holy covenant they have entered into today to be faithful, loving, and kind to each other. Dear God, may they live in Your grace and be forever true to this union. Amen.”
“Hyun-Ah, I give you this ring as a symbol of our vows, and with all that I am, and all that I have, I honor you. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. With this ring, I thee wed.” Kyuhyun says, slipping the ring onto the fourth finger of her left hand. Hyun-Ah smiles up at him, slightly tearful.
“Kyuhyun, I give you this ring as a symbol of our vows, and with all that I am, and all that I have, I honor you. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. With this ring, I thee wed.” Hyun-Ah promises, her voice steady in spite of the mist in her eyes.
Hyun-Ah and Kyuhyun move up towards the candelabra, where two taper candles burn separate on either side of a larger pillar candle.
“The two outside candles have been lighted to represent both your lives in this moment. They are two distinct lights, each capable of going their separate ways. As you join now in marriage, there is a merging of these two lights into one light. This is what the Lord meant when He said, ‘On this account a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall be one flesh.’ From now on your thoughts shall be for each other rather than your individual selves. Your plans shall be mutual, your joys and sorrows shall be shared alike. As you each take a candle and together light the center one, you will extinguish your own candles, thus letting the center candle represent the union of your lives into one flesh. As this one light cannot be divided, neither shall your lives be divided but a united testimony in a Christian home. May the radiance of this one light be a testimony of your unity in the Lord Jesus Christ.” The minister directs, and Hyun-Ah and Kyuhyun take their individual candles, tipping them towards the unity candle in the center. Once it is lit, they blow out their own candles, placing them back on the candelabra and walking back to stand in front of the minister.
“Because Kyuhyun and Hyun-Ah have desired each other in marriage, and have witnessed this before God and our gathering, affirming their acceptance of the responsibilities of such a union, and have pledged their love and faith to each other, sealing their vows in the giving and receiving of rings, I do proclaim that they are husband and wife in the sight of God and man. Let all people here and everywhere recognize and respect this holy union, now and forever.” The minister proclaims.
“Join with me as we ask God's blessing on this new couple. Eternal Father, redeemer, we now turn to you, and as the first act of this couple in their newly formed union, we ask you to protect their home. May they always turn to you for guidance, for strength, for provision and direction. May they glorify you in the choices they make, in the ministries they involve themselves in, and in all that they do. Use them to draw others to yourself, and let them stand as a testimony to the world of your faithfulness. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.” The minister prays.
“You may now kiss the bride.” He announces, and Kyuhyun grins, bending down to kiss Hyun-Ah gently. The congregation bursts into applause, and the minister says, “It is now my privilege to introduce to you for the first time, Mr. and Mrs. Cho Kyuhyun!” Cheers and applause echo in the church as the congregation cheers the newly wedded couple.
Kyuhyun and Hyun-Ah exit as a married couple, followed by their maid of honor and best man. The three bridesmaids and groomsmen follow them, and the flower girl and ring bearer skip up the aisle again.
