Last night I saw a documentary about Giant Squid.  (<--- That is why this is funny.) Now this wasn't the "On the Trail of the Giant Squid" from when I was in college. This one was new.  Dr. Kubodera, a Japanese scientist, who was looking for live specimens of the Giant Squid.  He went about it very practically. Where can we find this elusive deep ( Read more... )

There's also a documentary out there about some people who were looking for... arg... not Architeuthis, but the one that's just one size category under them -- Humboldt (sp?) squid? The goal of this group was to catch a medium-sized guy, and tag him with a remote video camera so that he could swim down really deep and they'd be able to get video od the really big guys. It worked, too.

They used a bait to catch and tangle the medium squid for long enough to get a couple divers in the water, and attach a specially-designed squid-cam. The medium squid high-tailed it back down to his bigger buds, and they got footage of teh really big squid going, "dude, what happened to you? what's this THING attached to your fin?! *chomp!*" Yeah, the big one totally attacked the camera on the littler one. not the littler one itself, just the camera.

it's a documentary worth seeing if you canfind it. That, and the one where they attach a remote camera to a pergerine and then get it to stoop. well, that one's kinda silly. but the humboldt squid one's awesome.

That Humbolt squid documentary sounds really cool. I'll have to see if I can find it somewhere. Did it have a title? Do you remember? They do have a lot more documentaries to rent these days. Like the Jean Luc Picard Dragon documentary. ^_^
