On Writing Fanfic Part 1 - Know Your Canon

Jun 25, 2010 11:28

I've only been in comics fandom for a little over a year-incidentally, that coincided with my discovery of Steve/Tony. (No, seriously, I have the exact moment that I discovered the joy of Steve/Tony bookmarked. I'm weird that way.) And you know, I got really, really lucky that I came in during a relative lull, and managed to not fall down a million ( Read more... )

Hmm. Interesting.

I don't know if you have this planned into your meta, but if I may suggest throwing a "Know your supporting cast" bit in there? Nothing (as an Avengers fan first) is more frustrating than having perfectly fleshed out Steve/Tony and having every other character flat and OOC.

But that's just something I'd like to see in here. :)

I actually have that planned for a bit under a "Story Elements: Characters". Which should be Part... Um. (counts) Either 13 or 8, depending on how I settle the ordering. But it's only a sub-heading for a while post; I could probably divide that up into three or four major posts: Heroes, Villains, Love Interests and Supporting Characters, if people would be interested in reading it.

The mods were thinking of arranging a Supporting Characters theme over the comm, like we did with Women of Captain America and Iron Man - where people pick a favourite character and post squee. :)

Ooooooooh. (grabby hands) DO WANT.

If you do that, let me know with a little advance warning, and I'll have that part (or parts) ready to match. (I love posting Topical Things)

Will do. :) We're hoping to have something of a schedule for the coming year, so everyone has the opportunity to plan their squee if they want to. :) (spontaneous squee still entirely permitted, of course!)

\o/ This sounds like an awesome plan. We can have regularly scheduled events, so no one gets broadsided. (Reverse Big Bang? [hopeful grin])

My understanding is that we will have a poll of Fun Things, and people will tickybox the ones they like, and everything there seems to be interest in, we will run. :) Both Big Bang and Reverse Big Bang are contenders, I believe. (I wonder if we could run them simultaneously?)

TICKY! HEE! (bounce) I would love both, but artists are a lot thinner on the ground than writers, it seems. Doing two art/fic challenges at once might thin them out even more. Careful scheduling might fix that though. Have the Artist Deadline for Reverse BB be back to back with the writing deadline for the standard BB or something.

I think we can all agree we like to click tickyboxes. Yeah, I'm thinking if we schedule with care, artists can be handing over their art to get a story written for it, and then receive a story to do art for. (If they choose to do both, which would of course not be compulsory.)

I'm sure there is someone out there who does not like tickyboxes, and I worry for them.

Not compulsory, but very awesome if they do. :D

That would be awesome. :)

It is entirely selfish as I adore ensemble fics and would like to see more variety - we tend to have either Classic or New, which is great, but I would love to see more cracked-out line-ups with Cersi and Monica and Namor. :)
