Death, in its primary sense, is when the soul departs the mortal shell it had inhabited previously. The soul crosses the barrier into the Netherworld--or not, and becomes a wandering ghost, unable to be reincarnated until it leaves the weight of its life behind.

The soul may remain in the Netherworld as long as it needs to--but eventually it must face judgment and reincarnation.
