guess what started today!
CURLING SEASON.
*the crowd goes wild*
my team even won.

it was very exciting. i made like one or two decent shots but to be fair i haven't been on the ice since april. i like my team - two people i don't know and one person i do. (i've played with him before but like years ago.) should be a fun season and even if we lose or tie every other game at least we won this one. :D
in the last two weeks my sister and i drove all her moving boxes up to salem where our cousin p put them in the crawlspace in the back of her garage until i need them next year. we had clam chowder for lunch. (just me and my sister. cousin p had things to do.) we also went to ikea and my sister got a storage cabinet thing after MUCH dithering. we also also built said storage cabinet thing and a tv console. and i did not do myself an injury this time! my sister cut herself tho. i guess all diy furniture requires a blood sacrifice.
i also had a dentist appointment, that was fun. (for various definitions of "fun" that really mean "my teeth are fine and the dentist is fast".)
in work news we had a retirement party for admin s the artist (as opposed to the other admins s - there are four of them) whose last day is this coming friday. we also (separately) had a surprise cake for admin a who's getting married in a week (there are three admins a). and corn fest was friday. so much corn. so much. also appetizers (shrimp cocktail my beloved) and thai food. i did not eat an inadvisable amount of shrimp altho it was very tempting. i did however bring home an ear of corn and some cake. the admin who organized it got a bunch of temporary tattoos and mine is still on - it survived the shower! - it's a little ear of corn holding a bag of corn and making a ^_^ face. i am powered by corn, what can i say. it was good corn, too.
another admin bought a bunch of stuff for the photo wall - a backdrop covered in pictures of corn, some plush corn hats with little silk tassels on top, a couple of blowup corns (imagine a beach ball except it's an ear of corn, that kind of thing), squeezy stress corns (like stress balls but, you know, ears of corn), signs, and two tall cutouts of
corn shocks. i said nothing about he who walks behind the rows but i thought it. plush corn hats with tassels are super cute but corn shock cutouts are creepy. corn fest is always a good time tho. and i'm not just saying that because the corn was yummy and i could stuff my face with shrimp.
i met
tamalinn for dinner on tuesday - sushi! - and we tried and failed to find cute japanese tchotchkes for friend r for her birthday. and other than that i have seen no friends. i did have writing group and had to submit something so i got to see those folks online - we meet over discord - and i love writing group and am not going to quit but everyone else seems to have plans and plots and occasionally even outlines and i'm just... vibes. i have an idea but what do i do with it? i never know. so we brainstormed which was actually really helpful and writer m said i could write like an anthology in the world i'm trying to build, since i don't have a novel length story in mind and they like my writing and want to read more of it. which is really gratifying to hear. every writer should have someone like that - not just someone to give feedback and bounce ideas off of but someone who can just uncomplicatedly say "i like this and i'm excited to read more of it". a cheerreader.
if any of you were in the path of hurricane helene i hope you're ok and you didn't lose power and more importantly were not flooded out.
how did drivers in the us get around in the early days? back before the standardized numbering of major roads and way before the national highway system.
there were some inventive ways to navigate but it turned out nothing was as cheap and convenient as the folding paper map.
have some victorian slang.
