i'm watching the finale of outer range and it's very, very weird. just so you all know, if you have prime and were interested in it. it's deeply strange.
today at work the admins had a brown bag lunch and a lecture from one of the faculty, which is a thing we're doing now which is fun and educational, and the faculty member today works with kind of making digital things real. like, she had videos of some of the projects her lab is working on, including light-sensitive paint that you can program to change colors or patterns when exposed to, like, uv light, and paint that you can program like a sensor so you can, say, dim the lights or play music by brushing your hand over a design on the wall, and 3d printing different kinds of patterns inside the structure of the thing (the example was 3d printed coffee cups with different internal structures that a coffeemaker will recognize, and each pattern is coded for a different kind of drink, so everyone can have their own cup and when you stick it on a sensor under the spout the coffeemaker knows what you like to drink), and some other things i don't remember. i don't think i'm explaining it well but it was really, really cool. after the lecture we got a little tour of the lab so we could see the equipment, the 3d printers and the laser cutter and the cameras set up for motion capture experiments. also we had lunch, but the lecture was much more interesting.
yesterday for lunch i met admin s from when i worked in the libraries which is always a good time, partly because she gives me the scuttlebutt and tells me she misses me. it's gratifying.
on sunday my sister and i looked at open houses - she wants to buy a condo - they were in two different but related subdivisions and were just variations on a theme, so not radically different from each other. and it was hot and humid, like summer. now it's back to being spring and i'm ok with that.
and on saturday i had plans which included sweeping and swiffing and cross stitching and maybe starting my fandom trumps hate podfic since i was alone in the house, and i did none of those things. raiders of the lost ark was on and i had to watch it. look, i don't make the rules. (blow it up. blow it back to god.) i met my sister for dinner (yummy) and a one man show called my son the waiter, a jewish tragedy - billed as a comedy - which was, well, we'll say "disjointed" and "a little dated" and leave it at that. some of the jokes were funny, and there was a woman in the audience who thought everything the guy said was the funniest shit she'd ever heard, but my sister and i were very much not the target audience and couldn't quite get into it.
(i'm gonna blow up the ark, rené!)
the next doctor who is a guy named ncuti gatwa, who got a
lovely video welcome from sylvester mccoy (the seventh doctor) and responded in kind. it's very sweet.
pilot of a small plane has a medical emergency while flying.
passenger with zero flying experience lands the plane, thanks to some help from ground control.
sunday was a lunar eclipse and a blood moon.
have some pictures.
scientists have successfully
grown plants in lunar soil. they planted the seeds, walked away for a couple days, and when they came back, the seeds had germinated. surprise!
meet the woman who wrote the first video game with a female main character. video game aficionados and historians
have been looking for her for a while.
