so today was a day of slack. >.< i worked from home. slack is inevitable. and the snacks are better here. :D altho i have not yet broken into the halloween candy, go me. (between me and my roommate we have four bags of assorted snack size chocolate. i hope we get trick-or-treaters because i'm working from home on monday and i don't know how much my roommate can or will want to take to work with her, and that's potentially a lot of chocolate sitting in the pantry calling your name.) yesterday the admins at work had a bring-your-own-lunch lunch, and the two women who organized it brought candy, and i ate an inadvisable number of mini kitkats. i couldn't help it. they're tiny and they were right there. i like the admins. they're fun people. and when i have questions, they answer.
one of the admins from when i worked in the libraries - admin s, who i love - randomly messaged me on slack to tell me she and one of the lovely folks from hr were talking about how much they missed working with me. which, awww. ^_^ especially considering i was only at the libraries for six months, and it's been way longer than that since i left. admin s has a very fluffy cat so every so often i have to share cat posts from tumblr. see, tumblr is good for something.
my curling team lost last sunday, sigh, but there was a woman on the other team who reminded me a lot of admin k who i worked with when i was a libraries admin. speaking of. :D they had the same face. and saturday night i went to my cousin j's birthday party - he turned fifty last year but obviously couldn't throw a real party, so he did it this year. they had live music - a soul-ish kind of duo - and j's girlfriend made pumpkin mac&cheese and someone else made pumpkin cookies and the punch was delicious but i didn't know anyone and they all knew each other and i can't just introduce myself to random strangers. i stayed a couple hours tho. i mean, pumpkin mac&cheese.
the other thing i did last weekend was virtual confabcon, where i co-modded three panels, altho for two of them (the dialogue panel and the post-phase-three mcu panel) i was mostly tech support. i did however get to lead the old guard 2 panel, which was maybe ten minutes of "things we know for sure" [1] and forty minutes of "things we really want to see". the nice thing about leading the panel is that you have license to talk a lot, so i did.
celli made a very good slide show, and i'm not just saying that because it included a bunch of pics of the cast. :D look, they're attractive people and we're all shallow. but it made me miss wincon. maybe next year!
in tv news i started watching midnight mass because catholic-flavored creepy is a kind of creepy i can occasionally get behind, and it did not go where i was expecting. i'm ok with that. it's still creepy and i have no idea how it's going to end. have any of you seen it? what do you think?
a wretched bar of scum and villainy - by which i mean, a gay bar in san francisco dressed up to look like the mos eisley cantina from a new hope. very nerdy and very cool.
cross stitch starry night stitched by a dutch woman living in the uk. it has 50k stitches and used half a mile of floss. O.O
in 1495 a ship sank off the coast of sweden. it's... more advanced than expected for its time period. marine archaeologists are very excited.
and in that vein, a mummy discovered in 2019 is also older than originally assumed, by about a thousand years. he was preserved with the kind of sophisticated embalming processes and materials that wouldn't really be used for another millennium. neat!
the us has issued its first passport with an "x" gender designation for an intersex traveler. which means intersex and non-binary folks - and anyone else who doesn't identify as male or female - have a third option or their passports. which is pretty neat.
[1] "things we know for sure" do not include the actual title of the sequel. i like 2 old 2 guard, myself. or mamma mia: here we guard again. but also i think the next thor (and why are we getting a fourth thor movie anyway?) should be called thor 4: more thor, so what do i know.
