guess what i did today! go on, guess!
I DID MY OWN GROCERY SHOPPING. AT AN ACTUAL STORE. PUSHING AN ACTUAL CART.
with the boot, without the crutches. and when i left IT WAS SNOWING. WHICH WAS VERY EXCITING. altho now i have to brush off my car. >.< but anyway! i'm mobile and almost totally self-sufficient again! ("almost" because i need to replace some of my blinds and i'm not stepladder-ready yet.)
i got to fondle my own produce! and check my own eggs for cracks! and pick my own replacements if the store was out of something! ok, and try to avoid all the clueless people who leave their carts in the middle of the aisle and who stand in the middle of the aisle and who, uh, cut the line at the deli counter. but still. it was very productive.
and yesterday i had to pick up a prescription at cvs, and because it was such a nice day i went to the diesel cafe while i was out and got a vietnamese coffee and a cookie and it was like the before times. IT WAS SO NORMAL.
also today one of my pi's called me because he forgot registration week is tomorrow, and he needs to see each of his students for like fifteen minutes or half an hour. he apparently sent me an email and i guess when i didn't answer he called. i didn't tell him i don't work on weekends. (he's usually very low-maintenance and it's not like this kind of thing happens all the time, so i cut him some slack.) i'm not sure what he wanted me to do about it today, but whatever it is, i can do it first thing tomorrow morning.
last night my sister came over so we could watch the dark knight rises and order mexican food. well, "mexican". it was delicious.
my bigbang is now 1430 words. this time last year i think it was about 12k. i am... not proud of this.

african-american cantors rediscovered on century old records - there used to be internationally-known black cantors from black jewish congregations in the us. they toured and recorded albums and how cool is that? random little-known bit of jewish american history.

there's a private library in belgrade
that's been in the same family since 1720. so far it's survived wars, dictatorships, communism, nazis, and garden-variety familial neglect. now it's got upwards of a million books and is open to the public.
if the presence of first dogs in the white house makes you wonder things like who walks them? who feeds them? do they piddle on the rugs, and what happens if they do?
this might answer some questions. warning: may make you like presidents you didn't formerly like, because you suddenly learn what total dog people they were/are.
