mostly tv, some history

today was the 75th anniversary of the us dropping the bomb on nagasaki, which i learned we did to show japan (and i guess the world?) that hiroshima wasn't a fluke, and if we could do it once, we could do it a second time. whether that's the real reason or not, i don't know. when you're learning about ww2 in school, you don't really learn about nagasaki, other than it was the target of the second bomb. i mean, the name of the plane that went to hiroshima is a trivia answer (the enola gay, and if you were a child of the 80s you may or may not be earwormed with the omd song >.< ), but who knows the name of the second plane? right? if you want to be horrified, saddened, and a little hopeful, there's an interesting national geographic article with some beautiful and horrible photos.

national geographic also has a neat article about the new york public library's map collection, and i have to say, map curator is one of my dream jobs. so much cool shit there.

also, kitbull, a super cute animated short about a kitten and a pitbull.

i finally finished babylon berlin and i don't know how i feel about the third season. i liked the bits of continuity with s1 and s2 and the progression of some of the relationships, but there were a couple of absurd plot developments and something that felt like a medical anachronism, altho it's not something i know anything about so maybe it was historically accurate after all. and there was some stuff that made it feel like the queer, decadent berlin of the 20s, finally. i especially liked that charlotte's response to finding out graf was gay and had a crush was "so who is he? are you going to introduce us?" like it was no big deal he was hot for a guy. (rath was likewise totally nonjudgemental, which, yay.) i also really appreciated that the guy was interested back. it was super cute. disappointed that they actually went through with greta's execution, altho i guess if she was saved at the very last minute it would be a little much. according to imdb there's another season, altho it's anyone's guess when i'll get to see it.

the alienist is also done for the season. i think s2 was more coherent than s1. overall i enjoyed it except they killed marcus! one of the cute jewish brothers! shot in the chest! wtf! there was yelling in my household! altho i couldn't figure out why john moore was attracted to violet enough to want to marry her. she seemed like kind of an airhead and just not that interesting. (and hearst was such a dick, altho i think in real life he was.) and everyone wore such neutral colors - so much black and white and gray and brown. SO MUCH BLACK. SO MUCH. that just didn't seem right for the belle epoque. it was so visually boring, too.

wrenlet recommended the santa clarita diet, because timothy olyphant, so i have something new to watch. also the daily netflix recs email coughed up a movie called the promise, starring oscar isaac <3 and charlotte le bon (no relation to simon) and christian bale, with a role of as-yet-undetermined size for marwan kenzari, who's one of the immortal battle husbands in the old guard. it's like netflix knows me. :D (i feel i should apologize to anyone who follows me on tumblr and doesn't care about this movie. i'm sorry, i still don't know what got over me.)

silence of the lambs is on, and when i catch it, i must watch. it's such a good movie. what does this guy do? he covets. i remember reading somewhere that sir anthony hopkins would occasionally use the hannibal lecter voice on his wife. she was not amused. buffalo bill has waaaaay too much basement for the size of his house, tho. that throws me out of the movie every time.

what is this ridiculous fixation, animation, the alienist, movies, maps, historical record, babylon berlin
