What I just finished reading:
we sold our souls, which i mostly liked altho i wasn't at all scared or even mildly freaked out by the horror. i caught a bunch of general copyediting mistakes - missing periods and commas, quotation marks at the beginning (or ending) of a quote but not at the end (or beginning), a scene where the main character and a girl who picks her up hitchhiking meet a group of guys - only four are named, but the narrative mentions five guys TWICE. no, story, there are four. dumb shit like that. it has nothing to do with the author, but it kinda turned me off.
i liked the main character, tho, and i liked that she's in her mid-forties, because how often do women in that age bracket get to be the protagonists/heroes of rock&roll stories? y'know?
What I am reading now:
good omens, which i started yesterday and so far just reminds me of the show. this is ok.
What I'm going to read next:
no idea. none. zero. zip.
yesterday was kind of slow at work but today was better. the admins had a two-hour meeting to do stuff like codify what we do so we can't be taken advantage of by the rest of the department (i had to duck out half an hour early because eh is going on vacation on friday and i needed to meet with her before she leaves), and borg jokes may or may not have been made. i love that i work with nerds. very competent, got-their-professional-shit-together nerds. it's nice. also we had lunch. :D
i also learned that even tho i was told the job was temp to perm, and even tho it might actually be temp to perm, if they decide to keep me on i still have to go through the standard hiring process and be interviewed again. they have to post the job publicly, altho they can post it for a really short period of time. i was apparently hired as a temp because they needed someone and didn't have time to go through a formal hiring process for a full-time employee. i don't know if this means i should worry about being made perm or not. i think for now i'm going to not worry.
the walkman is forty years old (holy shit) and in its honor sony is releasing
a walkman-inspired device for downloading music files and streaming. no word on when (or if) it will be available in the us, but you lucky europeans can take advantage in december.
have some articles on photography -
the 1980s graffiti boom in the bronx and
queer erotic beach pics from the 30s/40s. cool shit.
and finally, get some kleenex because in memory of 9/11 and the tireless first responders and various search and rescue teams that went to the pentagon and the twin towers, i bring you a twitter thread of
search and rescue dogs (and a couple of on-site therapy dogs). they were all such good girls and boys.
