there is honey cake in my kitchen and i can't eat it

my sister is having people over tomorrow night after services, so i made a ( honey cake. )

Oooh, I haven't had honey cake in FOREVER. I have my grandmother's recipe somewhere, I should try to find it (although, if I recall correctly, it's of the 'bake in a pan until done' type for those pesky specifics like pan size, temp and time)

i hate those kinds of recipes! i'm not that frequent a baker to be able to accurately guess how long to bake anything and at what temperature. altho if she could bake a decent honey cake from it, so could you.

Wow, that is a completely different recipe for my honey cake. (Which, to be clear, I don't eat because faith stuff, just because that shit is delicious. Though it does come up a lot at my personal holidays.) Looks good, though! I might have to try this one next time.

this is pretty much the only honey cake i've ever had. i mean, it's not the kind of thing that shows up on restaurant menus and i don't tend to go to other people's houses for dinner for the high holy days, which is the only time of year i eat it. definitely try it! how is yours different?

and dude, i don't care why you do or don't eat honey cake, or whose recipe you use. it's not a ritual, it's just a family tradition. a delicious family tradition. :D

No raisins, for one. I'm dubious about raisins in cakes. Golden raisins sometimes get a pass, but only sometimes. (You should hear my opinion about carrot cake).

Actually, here, this is easier. https://smittenkitchen.com/2008/09/majestic-and-moist-honey-cake/ Except I bump up the coffee, and I don't use cinnamon at all, I only do the cloves and allspice. I know, weird. Cinnamon's usually the best part of that particular spice section, but the honey makes it awesome. Ends up with a pleasant surprising depth. Oh! And I use the honey-est honey I can find. Screw clover. I've experimented, and unfortunately, the orange juice is required ( ... )

there's a lot in that honey cake! the oj and whiskey are interesting in a good way, tho. personally i'm a fan of raisins in baked goods, and my response to the no-raisin contingent is basically "that's ok, more raisins for me :D ". my feelings about raisins in honey cake aren't as strong as my feelings about raisins in carrot cake, tho. i mean, carrot cake just isn't carrot cake without them.

your mention of the russian bakery reminds me that i have had honey cake out of season, baked by someone who isn't my mom! when i went to new york last year to see dear-tiger we went to brighton beach, which is full of russians, and got honey cake from a russian grocery store (where i had to ask her what everything was because of course all the signs on all the baked goods were in cyrillic). it was several layers and half cake and half whipped cream, and it was SO GOOD. so if the honey cake at the cinderella bakery is that good, and it sounds like it is, i'm not surprised it's all gone by breakfast.
