dammit, marvel

What I just finished reading:
tracks, which it turned out i remembered very little of. i think i like the bingo palace better, and i felt like i should be making a family tree, but i'm glad i reread it. eventually i'll get around to love medicine and probably the beet queen.

What I am reading now:
the riddle-master of hed, by patricia mckillip, because apparently i'm in a "reread books unearthed from the parents' basement" mood. i thought my friend amy made me read the riddle-master trilogy in high school, but i bought the riddle-master of hed at a used-book store when i was in college, which i know because the receipt was still inside the front cover. now it's a bookmark. :D

i'm really liking the small scale so far. (it gets bigger.) and i don't remember what happens, so everything will be a surprise.

What I'm going to read next:
i can actually answer this! heir of sea and fire, because it's the next book in the series.

if you haven't heard already you have now - in captain america: steve rogers #1 (out now at a comic shop near you!) steve is revealed to be... a sleeper hydra agent. because hydra recruited his mom (and him) when he was still wee. there are so many levels of wrong to this that i can't articulate them, but let's start with the fact that cap was created by two jewish guys as an overt response to what hitler was doing in europe - and which the us was steadfastly refusing to get involved with - he was from the outset created to fight fascism by men who couldn't do anything about the fact that their people were being killed in droves. and marvel in its infinite wisdom thinks it would rejuvenate cap to make this symbol of the best that america should be into a nazi.

as was pointed out on tumblr and twitter (and probably by other people), it takes a special kind of privilege to not realize that "this person you thought was good and decent and on your side? they actually hate you!" is something that not-straight, not-white, not-christian not-men deal with a lot. it's not an edgy, exciting reveal. making your good guy a secret nazi is boring and lazy and cheap. and considering the men who created your good guy were jewish? it's fucking disgusting, not to mention disrespectful as hell. joe simon and jack kirby are spinning in their graves and i hope this series tanks.

and don't tell me "oh, it's comics, this will be retconned, steve won't be a hydra agent forever". i know. i don't care. someone still thought it was a story that needed to be told.

in less table-flippy news, today is towel day. i assume all you hoopy froods know where your towels are. :D

also it was 88º in boston this afternoon and i was very, very confused. (also inside the office and thus very, very air-conditioned.)

stalagmite structures discovered in a cave show neanderthals were more sophisticated than we thought - these things are about 176,500 years old, give or take. no one knows how or why they were built, but just the fact that they're there is a huge deal.

if anyone's going to be in tokyo between july 17 and next may, the ghibli museum is going to have a catbus big enough for adults to ride. catbus! eeeeee.

captain america, what the hell marvel, anthropology, wednesday reading meme, what the fucking fuck?, catbus, douglas adams
