so my sister and i saw the force awakens today and i got pretty much exactly what i was hoping for. gorgeous explosions and really fabulous flying fighter sequences. :D i'm not sure how i feel about kylo ren being han and leia's son, altho i guess there are really only two options if you want him to be able to use the force that strongly. (plus which, there seem to be a certain amount of daddy issues in the original trilogy, and in a lot of plotty ways tfa reminded me of a new hope, so the presence of more father-son stuff kinda fit.) i was mostly unprepared for han's death - the internet totally came through for me and i wasn't spoiled, but my sister heard something on the radio about someone having to kill his dad, which of course she repeated to me, so by that point in the movie i guessed han was going to bite it. i did not approve. i did like that he and leia weren't really together and kinda split after their son went over to the dark side. and of course she's general organa. i mean, come on.

i liked rey a lot, especially all the times she tried to rescue herself rather than wait for someone to come get her, and i liked finn, and i liked poe, and i kinda wish we'd gotten a little more captain phasma, and i loved that one of the x-wing resistance pilots was a woman.

daniel craig had a cameo as stormtrooper jb-007. heh.

i don't know if i have anything particularly deep to say about it, but i enjoyed it a lot. i may or may not have gone "yes!" with fangirly excitement when han and chewie step onto the millennium falcon the first time. just... eeeeee. pretty much all of the millennium falcon's scenes made me wriggle with glee. (rey flying her around jakku trying to escape tie fighters was particularly fantastic.) and han suggesting finn drop captain phasma down a garbage chute - and asking how the starkiller can be blown up, because there's always a way to do that - was a fun callback. and! admiral "it's a trap!" ackbar! discussing how to take down the starkiller, natch.

also? it just looked really good. everything looked solid, and not total cgi.

previews included one for batman v superman, which i still don't want to see. nice to see wonder woman in the preview, tho. we also got one for cacw, and i reacted about as you'd expect, by which i mean absolute fangirl hysterics. very contained hysterics, because, you know, i was in public in a packed movie theater, but still, there was some flail.

movie review, star wars
