on the bus home tonight i entertained myself thinking of zine titles for a story that may or may not ever be written. the only one i liked was 69 parsex (maybe "parsecs"), which has a mix of kinky stuff and straight-up science fiction nerdery. altho not necessarily at the same time, so it might not be the place to go for reviews of the r2d2-shaped vibrator or the death star anal beads. (altho seriously, imagine a string of anal beads that look like little death stars. how cool would that be?) (if such a thing already exists i, uh, will not be surprised.) i have no idea how much the kink scene and the scifi-nerd scene overlapped in the early/mid-80s, but probably more than i think.

if any of you lovely people happen to have experience with zines in the pre-internet age, please share with the class!

i had an issue with my phone at work this morning, which i discovered when someone in the new york office couldn't get a hold of me to get me access to an application i need access to. she im'ed me, i called her on my cell phone, i had THE HARDEST TIME understanding what she was saying. english is clearly not her first language, which normally wouldn't be an issue except her accent made her incomprehensible. the fact that i had to talk to her on my cell phone did not help. on the other hand, she told me who i needed to talk to about getting access to the thing i need access to, which did help. (and now i have access and need to watch a two-hour training video. can you hear my eyeroll from there?) and later i unplugged my phone and plugged it back in, and then it worked. but still! i swear i only understood every other word she said to me.

a member of parliament wants hedgehogs to be the national symbol of the uk. so... the uk wants to be known as a small, spiky, cranky-looking country, huh? but also, so cute!

speaking of cute, a bunch of penguins made a break for it in a danish zoo. their wet footprints kind of gave them away.

way back in the day - like, the 17th century - letter postage was paid by the person receiving the letter, and if they didn't want it, they just didn't pay for it, and it would go back to the post office. sometimes the postmaster kept it. now there's a trunk full of undelivered letters to and from normal people in the netherlands that scholars are going through. neat!

apology cakes that probably won't cut it.

michelangelo's house is for sale. who's got eight million bucks? you get three buildings for that, at least. (more pics here.)

this was yesterday's news, but same-sex marriage is now legal in ireland! it's the first country to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. and today the first couple got married. they've been together twelve years. all together now - awww. ^_^
