oh what a day! what a lovely day!

thank you, scotus, for legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide.

It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization's oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.

The judgement of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed.

It is so ordered.

(from justice kennedy's opinion.)

and also thank you for upholding the affordable care act yesterday.

earlier this week a bunch of confederate flags came down in a bunch of states, and wal-mart and amazon and sears took all the confederate-flag-themed stuff off their shelves. a woman is going to be on the ten-dollar bill. (we just don't know who yet.) the stonewall inn was designated a historical landmark on tuesday, the first time a new york landmark was so designated for its place in lgbtq history. health insurance companies that insure government workers now have to cover services, drugs, and etc for transgender federal employees.

god damn but i love watching history being made.

i've probably retweeted more today that i have in the past three months. my twitter feed was all rainbows and glitter and squee. cnn was wall-to-wall marriage coverage until about an hour ago, when they switched to reverend pinckney's funeral in south carolina. it was so nice to have so much good news. cnn had a conservative correspondent on who said same-sex marriage was good for kids, good for family values, good for economic stability, and her fellow conservatives needed to get over their shit because they're on the wrong side of history. she was so excited that her gay friends and family member(s?) can get married anywhere in the country now, and so excited that gay couples with kids are now entitled to all the family benefits and legitimacy that straight couples with kids get. and really, who can blame her?

california is thisclose to making childhood vaccinations mandatory, with no exemptions except for medical ones. so all those ignorant parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids because vaccines are "toxic" or "poison" or "not natural" or "cause autism" or whatever bullshit excuse is most convenient will have to homeschool their kids if they want to opt out of proven medical science.

(i have strong feelings about people who can vaccinate but don't, and they are not nice ones.)

so it's been a pretty fabulous week.

From the highest of this nation's perches, in the most authoritative of this nation's voices, a majority of justices told a minority of Americans that they're normal and that they belong - fully, joyously and with cake. --frank bruni, in the new york times

confederate flag, time for cake, health care, vaccinate your children you selfish fuck, historical record, lgbtq rights, gay marriage
