i saw age of ultron again, with my sister this time, and the stuff that annoyed me the first time, still annoyed me, altho the stuff i liked the first time, i still liked.
Uh, no, Tony HASN'T seen Steve's dark side. But the rest of the world did when he pretty much took down Hydra in one afternoon because he found out they'd kidnapped and brainwashed and tortured his best friend.
What Wanda was showing was everyone's greatest fear and/or regret - not their dark side. For Tony, he's terrified his friends will all die because he couldn't protect them, for Thor it's that being on Earth will mean the ruin of Asgard, for Natasha, it's willingly going through sterilization to become a better killer. Steve's fear is easy, because his greatest fear has already come true - he never made it home. He's alone in a new century & everyone he ever loved is dead, except for his best friend, who, y'know, was kidnapped and brainwashed and tortured for seventy years. That's why he was able to put a stop to the vision - and that's what the scene shows, is him stopping it - because he's already made peace with his fear, and he's trying (by searching for Bucky) to make peace with his greatest regret.

yeah, i know that - hence "bucky's in trouble, let's fuck shit up", for various definitions of "in trouble" that mean "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO TO HIM" - i meant where was it in aou.
i know wanda wasn't showing everyone their dark side, but i thought she was showing them their darkest fears, which was why i didn't quite get why steve got peggy and the end of the war. altho the celebrating did look a little surreal, in a "this is not what it looks like" kind of way. it being his greatest regret, because he's already faced his greatest fear, makes more sense.
But he DIDN'T get Peggy & the end of the war, that's the point.
It's not like Wanda's powers are for the sole purpose of turning people darkside - she can use their fears & regrets AND deepest yearnings & desires against them. The point of doing the mind-whammy was to incapacitate the group and mentally fuck them up, which she did. Including Steve, before he shut it down & said no, I'm not doing this, I'm not going there.
that hadn't occurred to me, altho the scene with all the people dancing did look a little too on-edge, like it was supposed to be a happy occasion but underneath it really, really wasn't. i like your interpretation! it's like another side of tony's vision, that your actions (or in tony's case i guess lack of action) would unintentionally hurt the people you care about.
It is open to interpretation, but I saw something different in Steve's vision. I saw in it the realization that he actually didn't want what he thought he wanted. He got the end of the war and the dance with Peggy and it still wasn't satisfying. It's the fear that all he is is the Avenger. Not the man. Not anymore.
which kind of tracks with what he says to tony at the end, that one guy went into the ice and another guy came out. altho when he said it he sounded more like he was coming to grips with it - he was accepting that he wasn't ww2 steve any more, and didn't necessarily want what ww2 steve wanted - and less that it was something he was afraid of. i kinda like that it seems to be pick-your-own-interpretation, but at the same time i kinda want to know how we're supposed to take it.
