the very last topic for december babble, for today because i'm actually on time, is my first fandom and how did i get into online fandom, for
desertport, and the short answer for both is poison elves, a black and white indie comic book written and drawn by drew hayes, which i always think of as the comic i used to read that no one's ever heard of, except that every so often someone has. millions of years ago (i think i was still in grad school, so a long time), someone started up a mailing list and mentioned it in a letter that made it to the lettercol (back in the days when people wrote actual letters to comic book letters columns), and i thought "what the hell", and "it would be cool to be able to talk to other people about this ridiculous comic", and so i joined. the mailing list was a nutbar bunch of people, plus the occasional dick, and anyone i know on lj who i knew before lj (and who isn't
ephemera or
shivering-lance), that's where i know them from. we were by and large a fairly friendly and welcoming bunch of people, and because new issues only came out every other month, we had a lot of downtime to talk about a lot of random shit. there were very sporadic instances of fanfic or fanart - and the odd pe-related tattoo - but mostly we talked about the actual story when we weren't talking about the random shit. pe was the fandom by which all others were judged until i found spn, because it was smallish and welcoming and the barriers to entry were really low.
also, pe fandom gave me my favoritest fannish story, which is the story of how i helped sacrifice the blessed virgin larry to the dark lord drew hayes at wizardworld chicago one year. the blessed virgin was eighteen and just the cutest. (he volunteered to be sacrificed.) it is entirely possible that somewhere in the vastness of the internet there are still pictures of me co-leading a procession through a corner of the con, wearing a cape i bought at the costume store with holes cut in the hood for my ridiculous papier-mache ears. (it took one plastic headband, three different kinds of adhesives, and a bunch of people helping to get them to stay on my head. they were so tall i couldn't sit up in the car on the way to the convention center. i had to lean sideways in the back seat.)
i went to chicago i think five years running, for pe. it was fun while it lasted, and i met some pretty fabulous people through the fandom. also, pe had the purple marauder. nyar!
in totally other news, today i broke in my crock pot by making chili. it's vegetarian chili because i didn't have the patience to brown a pound of ground beef, but i think next time i'm going to take the time. i mean, come on, meat. :D i tasted it to make sure it had enough chili powder (it does), but i made spaghetti for dinner so i haven't had, like, a whole bowl of chili yet. i did however scoop it into plastic containers and put them in the freezer. and now of course my kitchen is full of dirty dishes, including a crock pot which i can't even rinse out because my sink is full of dirty dishes. >.< on the other hand, i have chili in my freezer for future eating. go me.
