This is a wonderful intersection! I really enjoyed both the above water and below water stories! I liked your heroine and I hope she is able to rescue herself...or at least find more of her journey left to take! You had great visuals here and a delightful tone throughout!

i sent beldarzfixon a summary of the story because i didn't have a draft yet, and that was apparently enough for him to get started. it was a great intersection. i'm glad you liked mine, natch. :D i had a very strong sense of visual place - the geography, the landscape - so i'm pleased it came across.

(and i think katya does have a second life in front of her, with the fish-girl.)

i was trying for potentially happy at the end, but yeah, i guess it kind of is. i mean, katya would say she had a good life with her husband and kids etc etc, but there was always that little tug from the fish-girl waaaaay to the west.

This was very cool ♥ I loved Katya and her deep sense of responsibility to others, and her conscious decision to stay, even though the sea kept calling to her for as long as she lived. And how she stopped talking about the fish-girl because her family didn't understand and I think were upset by such talk. And then I love how part of her decision to marry Tomo is about him having a house by the sea, how it's an important enough detail, as important as what kind of a person he is. So I respect her choice to live on land for the sake of her family, but I'm also happy that now as an old woman, she's finally going back to sea. She must be very happy :D

as a little kid she stopped talking about the fish-girl because no one believed her, and as an adult she stopped because what was the point? it upset people. (and no one believed her.) she did actually like timo - and he was cute :D - but being able to live right at the edge of the water was a major bonus. and i think her kids and grandkids were less than thrilled that she decided to go home as an old lady, but they had their own lives to worry about and she didn't feel so tied to them any more, and really i think her husband was the most upset by her desire to be with the fish-girl, and he was dead, so she felt like she could finally do what she wanted with herself. so she got to have a good life twice.

I love how this progressed. The details in this make this such a strong piece. Its heartening how she put aside thoughts of the fish girl to carry on with her duties to family and society and then she actually went to follow the cal of her heart when she was done with all her duties. It inspires.

thank you! katya did have a strong sense of responsibility and she loved timo and wanted to have kids with him, so it was kind of like giving up one good life for another good life. even if the potentially good life she gave up still always kind of pulled at her....

I loved the way you told this, the land and sea portions. Katya must have been very frustrated, but I'm glad she had Timo to love and keep her safe.

frustrated is a good word for it! (especially once she got over being pissed that her husband packed her up and moved both of them way far into the interior....) altho if she hadn't had timo, or hadn't actually loved him, she would've kept going back to the sea until the fish-girl ma. :Dnaged to keep her. i'm glad you liked the land/water split. :D
