What I just finished reading:
flowers in the attic and petals on the wind, both of which i found kind of frustrating. flowers because i wanted the purple to be better written, and petals because i didn't actually like cathy all that much.
(i may or may not have skimmed a chunk in the middle where she's all teenage sexpot without any awareness of how skeevy it is for a high schooler to put the moves on the forty-year-old widower who took her in, or how skeevy it is for them to sleep together.) she spends a lot of time blaming her mother for every bad thing that happens to her - even stuff that's actually more her fault on account of she does some stupid and shortsighted things, or stuff that really isn't anyone's fault - and when she's not blaming her mother, she's blaming herself for being wicked and impulsive and having a million other faults. she isn't a mary sue because she's far from perfect, but every man who meets her falls madly in love with her and wants her to the exclusion of all other women, and after a while i got tired of it. and she does a lot of the "i want you get away from me don't touch me kiss me don't kiss me do you love me flirt flirt push away push away" - coming on to guys and flirting and trying to seduce them and realizing at the last minute that she's in over her head or she doesn't want the guy just yet or he isn't acting according to her plan so she won't sleep with him right now, even tho she's got him all worked up and she really does want him to fuck her - and i just wanted to reach into the book and smack her. plus there's some of the "he forces her and she tries to fight him off but then she actually really likes it" weird romance novel trope. you know, it's not rape because his violence and disregard for her turn her on. ugh.
they're really not very good books - unsympathetic main character aside - but i can see why i was so into them when i was twelve. i mean, if nothing else, incest. (the game the whole family can play. :D )
What I am reading now:
i just finished petals on the wind so i'm not currently reading anything. well, a whole bunch of intros for
therealljidol, but i don't think those count.
What I'm going to read next:
people of the book, by geraldine brooks, because i bought it on saturday and it looked interesting, and i want to read something vaguely historical and not trashy gothic romance.
it was SO DEAD at work today i had time to start reading the huge number of intros for
therealljidol, as previously mentioned. there are a lot of people doing this thing. O.O and a lot of them are interesting writers. also one of the admins brought in little danishy type pastries, and if you know anything about me it should be that i don't turn down a free pastry or six. they were yummy.
apparently the french army has pretty fabulous rations. hands up everyone who's surprised. i mean, come on, it's FRANCE. of course their army rations are going to be good.
the book of margery kempe has been digitized and is online. this is VERY COOL.
