first, happy birthday a day late to suzvoy, fangirl, walker of small fluffy dogs, and pretty fabulous human being. every day is a good day for cake. :D

brief unconsciousness followed by having to sit things out for a few hours. ie, a wee bit of h/c altho with the world's least explicit c. maybe the questions i should be asking are how bad would the concussion be, what are the symptoms of same, how would you treat it, and how long until you're good to go.
in a pinch i'll totally settle for "knocked down but not out, made to sit for a bit just to be on the safe side", with no unconsciousness.
If you get knocked out cold even for a few seconds, unless you're a superhero you are gonna need medical attention. Headache for sure, possible nausea, confusion, sleepiness. Treatment is some kind of scan of the head, and then observation. No being alone for at least 24 hours.
If you want to tone it down from that, you should probably go with the down but not out. You can get a concussion without being knocked unconscious (I've had two! Oh joy!) but loss of consciousness is the big medical trigger- that's what they always ask first if you come in with any kind of head injury.
then i am definitely going with down but not out, because a hospital trip is a little more h than i was planning on. (also the fic i need to know this for is set in 1937, and i don't want to have to research the state of brain scanning equipment in the late 30s.)
i love it when i can be medically accurate and still write the scene the way i want. :D
Speaking as someone who is married to a man who's had 20 concussions....unless it gets pretty bad (LOC or a headache that lasts more than a day, two days, for example) we don't go to the hospital (and this includes the time that a tent pole beaned him square in the forehead). He got a sizeable goose egg in the middle of his forehead, but no real bruising. Depending on the state of the wood, there might be some scraping.
Symptomology: a little dazed, a little spacey, looking sleepy or stoned, same with speech: not slurred or incapable, but just sounding like he's distracted or a little dopey. Maybe (but not always) some slight physical clumsiness, especially right after it's just happened. Equilibrium problems, I mean.
His POV: Head feels heavy, every thought seems to take deeper concentration than he's capable of, problems keeping track of what's going on around you, concentration problems. Movement feels it takes more effort "moving through molasses". THROBBING head pain.
