dear new folks: i post like this a lot

it is now so cold in greater boston that the pipes to my bathroom froze, which means i can't take a shower until it gets warm enough to thaw them out. >.< this is entirely my fault - you're supposed to turn the tap on just a little so the water can drip so the pipes don't freeze (i had to do this in my old apartment too), and i spaced and didn't. so i will be borrowing other people's showers until mine works again, and by "other people" i mean "my parents". (i'm going over there for dinner tonight anyway.) sigh.

still no word on when my job actually starts, altho it will probably be next week. still super frustrated and annoyed, and every day they're not ready for me makes me nervous. and in the meantime i can't even take a nice hot shower to calm myself down.

last night i got home from writing group just in time for criminal minds, which was a cross between *sadface* and "OH MY GOD THAT IS DISGUSTING". and, uh, "i think spencer needs a haircut". so business as usual, basically. also, one of the women in my writing group is currently cowriting an unexpectedly long fic online with someone, so we talked a bit about cowriting vs role-playing, and how they were going to write this little side story that has ballooned into this huge thing, and what if the person she's writing with, who she only knows online and has never met in the flesh, isn't who she claims to be but is actually someone essentially playing a role online in order to cowrite, and how would one write a story like that, and probably some other nifty things i can't remember. this is why i like my writing group. i've been submitting my nanonovel when it's my turn for story critique, but because i've been submitting it in parts, but it's actually finished, they suggested i submit it all at once next time, so everyone can critique the whole thing. and i said "but it's 50k words". and one of the women said "my novel was ninety pages", and "how many pages is 50k words?" and i said "120?" (actually 105. but single-spaced.) so i might get to do that, but probably not until may or june.

also discussed at writing group, very briefly - that it is entirely possible to write 50k words of a single story and still not have a plot. and i know this, because i have done it. they asked me what the plot of the nanonovel was, and when i said i wasn't sure, one of the women said "you're not going to research battles and write a lot of battle scenes, because i think that would get boring," and i said "actually, that's exactly what i did". but, like, "ww1" can't be the entire plot.

in honor of the uk getting snowed on, allow me to share vintage photos of london in the snow. there are unsurprisingly a bunch of snowball fights. and a person on skis being pulled down the street behind a car.

100-year-old paper planes found in chapel eaves - they're technically not "planes", since they predate human flight, but still. evidence of misbehaving small boys from a century ago. i thought it was cute.

historical nifty, writing group, snow, oh but wait, criminal minds s8, starring tom and tom, my house is old and i am an idiot
