100 things: 010 - a wee church in a cave

Nov 15, 2012 16:05

i have no idea where i even got this pic, much less where the wee church is located. i'm kind of curious why someone decided to build it inside a cave. it's a bit like the full-size-building version of a ship in a bottle.

it looks like a little greek church, with the square shape and the dome, but the little greek churches i'm most familiar with have little blue domes, so i don't know. i do like that the (i'm guessing electrical) cable that goes across the front and around the side and into the little round window is also painted white. heh. someone went nuts with the whitewash, didn't they.

edit! thanks to ignipes who is fabulous and researchy, i now know that this adorable little church is panagia makrini, on the greek island of samos.

100 things!
