happy birthday to ignipes, published author (woot!) and writer of angsty teenage ghouls. and also happy birthday to shivering_lance, who has the dubious honor of being a. the person on lj i've known the longest, and b. the only person i knew in college who i still talk to. oh, and also published author. :D and also also happy birthday to sunshine95, librarian and hawaiian, who may or may not be published, i don't know. cake for all!

i am now officially a day behind on my nanonovel, because i spent waaaaaay too much time last night reading about betty smith (who wrote a tree grows in brooklyn and briefly attended classes at the university of michigan, where her husband at the time was in law school) and googling what kinds of things working-class folks in the 1910s might have had for lunch. and today i've spent way more time than is necessary googling floor plans of manhattan's gilded age mansions.
some people get sucked into tvtropes and lose four hours of their lives that way. i get sucked into web sites with restaurant menus and architectural babble.
also? i have no idea what wealthy seven-year-olds did with their time in 1919, besides go to school, slide around the ballroom in their sock feet, and pretend to be pirates. i just want to skip ahead to 1931, when james (the aforementioned seven-year-old) is in college and sean (the housekeeper's son and james' new best friend) is building the empire state building. not that i know a whole lot about new york in 1931, but the empire state building is a hell of a lot easier to google than hundred-year-old floor plans of city townhouses. (oh, and also, james' second-to-oldest brother is in chicago working with mobsters. i have no idea how he manages to escape jail time, and i think he stays in chicago the rest of his life.)
my boss is out of town until friday and while i do have stuff to do, it isn't three full days' worth of stuff, so i have all this time for the nanonovel, and i CANNOT CONCENTRATE. BAH.
also my web site where i host (among other things) the little graphics for my mood theme and the header for my lj has evidently run out of registration, but i can't reregister the domain OR renew it. so it's kind of in limbo, and to add to the complication, the email address the registrar has for me is one i haven't had access to in YEARS. (my provider changed, and with it my email. if anyone has any idea how to access an attbi.com address that you've forgotten the password to because you've been using comcast for at least seven years, please let me know.) this is one of those things that is totally my fault, but at the same time, i'd like to know how to fix it.
