holy shit, japan. O.O if any of you guys have friends or family there or in hawaii (or anywhere in the pacific, actually), i hope they're ok. i've been resolutely not looking for pictures or video of the disaster, but this clip of swaying buildings in tokyo is actually kind of cool. (if kind of scary....) they sway so they don't fall down. ( Read more... )

mother nature is a crazy bitch, frank lloyd wright, holy shit japan, nature is awesome and kinda scary, architectural nifty

The first time (over a decade ago) I stayed with friends who lived in a high-rise building in a windy city (Wellington) I kept thinking there was an earthquake whenever the wind made the building sway. It was rather disturbing.

it was probably built to do that, tho, ironically for safety. which probably isn't that reassuring when you're standing in it and it's swaying....

My dad used to work in the (former) Transco Tower in Houston. He said he adjusted to the swaying to the point he didn't notice it much, but he could always tell it was windy outside if he went in the men's room and water was sloshing around in the toilet bowls.

Every "Woooo, surf's up!" dude-bro in the world should watch this whirlpool clip and understand that tsunami =/= just a bigger wave. There is some weirdly-behaving energy down in those things and that's why even the six-foot swell they got in Crescent City, CA, can wreck a harbor.

i think working in a building that swayed as a matter of course would make me seasick ALL THE TIME. *blorp* and not being able to feel it but still seeing water sloshing around in the toilet would freak me right out.

all the video of water that i've seen is scary. you do not fuck with it because it will take you out.

"'woo, surf's up!' dude-bro" makes me think of the end of point break. oy.
